COBLESKILL WOMEN’S BASKETBALL MAULS ADIRONDACK 76-27 IN MVC PLAY
The SUNY Cobleskill women’s basketball program opened the 2007 portion of their season by mauling the visiting Timberwolves of Adirondack Community College by a 76-27 margin in Mountain Valley Conference action last night. The Fighting Tigers with the victory improve their season record to 11-3 overall on the year with a perfect 5-0 mark in conference play. Cobleskill is currently ranked 18th in the latest NJCAA Division III National Poll.
The Fighting Tigers opened the contest on an 18-2 run which effectively put the contest in the win column early. Using balanced scoring and tenacious defense, Cobleskill led 31-14 at the break before exploding for 45 points in the second half while limiting the Timberwolves to only 13 in the stanza.
The relentless Cobleskill attack was spearheaded by freshman center April Ackermann, South Huntington, NY, Sullivan West High School, who scored 17 points, grabbed 17 rebounds and blocked five shots on the evening. Senior forward Kim Stahl, Scotia, NY, Scotia-Glenville High School, contributed 15 points and six rebounds on the night while the triumvirate of: senior forward Andrea Piedigrossi, Cortland, NY, Cortland High School, 10 points, senior guard Meghan Smida, Cobleskill, NY, Cobleskill-Richmondville High School, 10 points, and senior center Kim McMillen, Greenville, NY, Greenville High School, 10 points and 10 rebounds each made strong contributions in the win.
“We had a good week of practice coming into this game after the extended break and given that we had spent nearly all of our time working on our defense; I was extremely pleased with the way, we played offensively,” said Fighting Tiger Head Coach Josh Suttles. “We did a great job of getting out in transition which led to easy scoring opportunities and I thought we did an excellent job of sharing the basketball which is evident in the fact that we had five players in double figures. Defensively we forced them to take the majority of their shots from outside of 15 feet and we did an exceptional job of contesting their jump shooters. The only negative tonight was that we gave up too many offensive rebounds but overall this was a good way to come back after break.”
The Fighting Tigers will next take to the hardwood on Saturday October 22nd when they host the Lady Kats of Erie Community College beginning at 1:00 PM.
TIGER NOTES: The Fighting Tigers have now won six games in a row their longest winning streak of the season. Cobleskill is currently 5-1 at home this season at the Iorio Gymnasium. The 27 points allowed to the Timberwolves was the second lowest point total the Fighting Tigers have allowed this season and the lowest total they have allowed to a visiting opponent this season. (Cobleskill defeated Columbia-Greene Community College by a 78-11 margin in Hudson, NY on December 5th.)
