FIGHTING TIGER WOMEN’S B-BALL CRUSHES FMCC 62-34
The SUNY Cobleskill women’s basketball team continued their winning ways last night at the Iorio Gymnasium using their trademark aggressive defense and a balanced offensive attack to easily defeat visiting Fulton-Montgomery Community College in Mountain Valley Conference play. With the victory the Fighting Tigers move to 10-1 overall on the season including a perfect 3-0 mark in conference play.
Leading 28-21 at the break, the Orange & Black opened the second half on a 14-3 run which effectively put the contest out of reach. Cobleskill continually frustrated the Raider offensive attack with aggressive half court defense limiting Fulton to only 13 points in the half and created a number of transitional opportunities in the home team.
Freshman center Shelley Pierson, Watervliet, NY, Watervliet High School, controlled the paint area for the Fighting Tigers scoring 14 points to go with 11 rebounds, three steals and two blocked shots while freshman point guard Nicole Garzon, Bayside, NY, Benjamin Cardozo High School, dominated the perimeter with 16 points, five steals, three rebounds and two assists on the evening.
Cobleskill also received consistent play from: freshman swing-player Jessica Byerwalters, Coeymans Hallow, NY, Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk High School, with eight points and three rebounds, freshman center/forward Breanne Sauve, Gloversville, NY, Gloversville High School, with eight points and three rebounds and from freshman guard Katie Greene, Port Crane, NY, Harpursville High School, with eight points on the night.
“I thought that we did a great job of dictating tempo in the second half and that a lot of the work that we did in the first half paid off in the second half with them only playing seven players in their rotation,” said Fighting Tiger Head Coach Josh Suttles. “We did a very good job of being physical with them which wore them down and were excellent contesting shots throughout the game. Individually I thought that Nicole Garzon played an outstanding all-around game tonight and that we got some very timely shooting from Katie Greene and April Ackermann which was extremely welcomed.”
The Fighting Tigers will next be in action on Saturday December 8th when they host the Huskies of Word-of-Life Bible Institute with tip-off scheduled for 1:00 PM.
