COBLESKILL WOMEN’S BASKETBALL DEFEATS QUEENSBOROUGH 67-51
The SUNY Cobleskill women’s basketball team took to the road on Saturday traveling to Queens, NY to post a 67-51 victory over previously unbeaten Queensborough Community College. With the victory the Fighting Tigers close out the first semester with a mark of 13-1 overall and ranked tenth in the latest NJCAA Division III National Poll.
The Fighting Tigers used a diversified attack to subdue their hosts paced by freshman forward Sharee Daniels, Poughkeepsie, NY, F.D. Roosevelt High School, with 12 points, six rebounds and two steals and freshman point guard Nicole Garzon, Bayside, NY, Benjamin Cardozo High School, who returned to her native area scoring nine points to go with five rebounds, four steals and two assists on the day.
Also contributing for Cobleskill in the victory were: senior guard Trista Thomas, Brooklyn, NY, Erasmus Hall High School, with eight points, seven rebounds and five assists, freshman center Shelley Pierson, Watervliet, NY, Watervliet High School, with eight points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots, freshman guard Katie Greene, Port Crane, NY, Harpursville High School, with nine points and senior forward April Ackermann, South Huntington, NY, who also scored eight points. Fighting Tiger freshman swing-player Jessica Byerwalters, Coeymans Hollow, NY, Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk High School, continued her strong play with four points, six rebounds and three assists on the day.
“This was a different type of game for us because they pressured us for 40 minutes full-court and played a very up-tempo, run-and-gun type of style,” said Fighting Tiger Head Coach Josh Suttles. “Our point guards did a great job of handling the pressure and with 49 fouls called; we did a good job, of maintaining our composure and adapting to the game that was given to us. Individually Sharee Daniels did a little bit of everything very well, Katie Greene did a good job of shooting the ball and Trista Thomas was excellent handling and distributing the basketball against their constant pressure. Given our foul trouble, we received contributions from many different people today. This type of game is a perfect illustration of why we carry such a large squad.”
The Fighting Tigers will return to the court after the semester break on Thursday January 17th when they travel to Glens Falls, NY to meet the Timberwolves of Adirondack Community College in Mountain Valley Conference action beginning at 6:00 PM.
