FIGHTING TIGER WOMEN’S BASKETBALL DOWNS ACC 76-40 IN MVC PLAY
The SUNY Cobleskill women’s basketball team continued their drive towards the post-season on Saturday traveling to Glens Falls, NY for a Mountain Valley Conference game versus the Timberwolves of Adirondack Community College. Using a powerful inside attack and a suffocating defense the Fighting Tigers had little trouble with the host Timberwolves taking the contest by a 76-40 score to improve their season record to 17-6 on the year with a 9-3 mark versus conference competition.
Pounding the Timberwolves on the inside was Fighting Tiger senior center Kim McMillen, Greenville, NY, Greenville High School, who scored 25 points and grabbed 15 rebounds and freshman center/forward April Ackermann, South Huntington, NY, Sullivan West High School, who scored 17 points and took down 12 rebounds on the day. Senior forward Kim Stahl, Scotia, NY, Scotia-Glenville High School, also reached double figures in scoring with 14 points for Cobleskill.
The Fighting Tigers received another all-around effort from senior guard Erinn O’Rourke, South Glens Falls, NY, South Glens Falls High School, who scored seven points, passed out five assists and registered six steals and from senior point guard Meghan Smida, Cobleskill, NY, Cobleskill-Richmondville High School, who tallied seven points. Freshman guard Anastasia Yakaboski, Calverton, NY, Riverhead High School, also equaled her season high in scoring for the Fighting Tigers with five points in the win.
“We were able to give some players extra minutes to work on things that will make us better,” said Fighting Tiger Head Coach Josh Suttles. “Defensively, holding team’s to 42 points is our magic number and the fact that we were able to do that on their home court says something. We didn’t necessarily play our most inspired game but we got the job done which is the most important thing about this game. Some people perceive this as a lesser game given the competition but this is an important win because it is a regional win and we need to continue to win to be in a position to get a bye and stay out of a sub-regional play-off game.”
Cobleskill will return to action on Tuesday February 13th when they host Schenectady Community College in Mountain Valley Conference action beginning at 5:00 PM. It will be “Senior Night” as the Fighting Tiger senior class will be honored in a pre-game ceremony.
TIGER NOTES: Kim McMillen’s 25 point/15 rebound performance was achieved in only 23 minutes of playing time. McMillen is quietly having a season worthy of post-season recognition averaging 14.9 points and 10.4 rebounds per game while shooting an impressive 49.8% from the field. The Fighting Tigers with a 9-3 Mountain Valley Conference record are in a battle for second place in the league with Herkimer Community College who sports a 10-3 conference record.
