FIGHTING TIGER WOMEN TOPPLE SCC ROYALS 56-36 IN MVC ACTION
The SUNY Cobleskill women’s basketball team continued their play-off drive on Tuesday night defeating the visiting Royals of Schenectady Community College on “Senior Night” by a 56-36 margin in a Mountain Valley Conference game. The victory improves the Fighting Tiger overall record to 18-6 on the year with a 10-3 record in league competition.
Tied at 19-19 with 2:00 left in the first half Fighting Tiger a full-court press led to several quick scores and a technical foul assessed to the Royals’ bench which gave Cobleskill a 25-19 advantage at the half. After the break, it was all Fighting Tigers all of the time as the Orange & Black’s pressure defense continually frustrated their visitors limiting them to only 17 points during the stanza as compared to 31 for the home team.
“This senior class has posted a 42-11 overall record and has a chance to be a part of a third consecutive twenty-win season so this was a great night for them,” said Fighting Tiger Head Coach Josh Suttles. “Once again we were strong defensively holding them to only 36 points but we definitely need to work on some offensive things before the play-offs. Our four remaining games are going to play a major factor in determining our post-season seeding so it is critical that we approach them with a sense of urgency and take care of the things that we have control over and leave the rest to the committee.”
Senior guard Erinn O’Rourke, South Glens Falls, NY, South Glens Falls High School, led the assault for the Fighting Tigers with 15 points, six steals and five assists on the evening while senior forward Kim Stahl, Scotia, NY, Scotia-Glenville High School, notched 14 points against the Royals.
Once again the Fighting Tigers out muscled the Royals in the paint as freshman forward/center April Ackermann, South Huntington, NY, Sullivan West High School, scored nine points and grabbed seven rebounds and senior center Kim McMillen, Greenville, NY, Greenville High School, added six points to go with seven rebounds. Senior forward Andrea Piedigrossi, Cortland, NY, Cortland High School, also continued to shine off the Cobleskill bench with nine points, four rebounds and three steals.
Weather permitting Cobleskill will return to action on Friday February 16th when they host Columbia-Greene Community College for a Mountain Valley Conference game beginning at 6:00 PM.
