COBLESKILL WOMEN’S BASKETBALL TOPS HUDSON VALLEY 74-56 IN TROY
With the NJCAA Region III Play-offs in the near future the SUNY Cobleskill women’s basketball team posted an important win, in their last league game of the season, over Mountain Valley Conference rival Hudson Valley Community College by a 74-56 margin in Troy, NY last night. With the victory the Fighting Tigers move to 21-6 overall with a 13-3 mark in conference play to finish in sole possession of second place in the league’s standings.
Once again the Fighting Tigers inside game proved too much for the host Vikings as senior center Kim Stahl, Greenville, NY, Greenville High School, scored 18 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked two shots on the evening and freshman center/forward April Ackermann, South Huntington, NY, Sullivan West High School, scored 15 points and took down 11 rebounds in the win. Senior forward Kim Stahl, Scotia, NY, Scotia-Glenville High School, returned to the Capital Region to score 12 points, pass out four assists and grab five rebounds while senior point guard Meghan Smida, Cobleskill, NY, Cobleskill-Richmondville High School, scored 13 points, passed out five assists, made five steals and grabbed four rebounds on the night.
The Cobleskill tandem of senior guard Erinn O’Rourke, South Glens Falls, NY, South Glens Falls High School, and senior forward Andrea Pedigrossi, Cortland, NY, Cortland High School also played a major role in the victory as O’Rourke scored nine points, made seven steals and passed out four assists and Pedigrossi chipped in six points and three rebounds as the Fighting Tigers swept the season series from the Vikings.
“I thought that we did a good job against their zone tonight of making the extra pass, finding the open player then making the open shot,” said Fighting Tiger Head Coach Josh Suttles. “Defensively Erinn O’Rourke did a great job of shutting down their shooter and we dominated the glass offensively and defensively throughout the entire game. It’s always nice to get a road win especially in this building which is an extremely difficult place to play in.”
The Fighting Tigers will next travel to Franklin, MA on Saturday February 24th for a contest versus NJCAA Division II Dean Junior College in team’s final regular season game. Cobleskill will then await its seed in the NJCAA Region III Division III Tournament which will be announced Sunday evening February 25th. The tournament’s opening round is tentatively scheduled; weather permitting, to begin on Tuesday February 27th at the higher seeded team’s home court with the tournament’s quarterfinal round thru championship game being played at Cayuga Community College in Auburn, NY from Friday March 2nd thru Sunday March 4th.
