FIGHTING TIGER WOMEN DEFEAT ERIE COMMUNITY COLLEGE 63-37
The SUNY Cobleskill women’s basketball team showed little in the way of “Bus Lag” after making a nearly 260 mile journey to Buffalo, NY on Saturday to convincingly defeat the Wildcats of Erie Community College by a 63-37 margin in NJCAA Region III Division III play. The regional victory improves the Fighting Tigers overall record to 17-3 on the season.
Once again freshman center Shelley Pierson, Watervliet, NY, Watervliet High School, scored 12 points and grabbed 16 rebounds versus the host Wildcats to secure the victory. Freshman guard Katie Greene, Port Crane, NY, Harpursville High School, also hit double figures for the Fighting Tigers scoring a career high of 10 points to go with four steals while freshman forward Sharee Daniels, Poughkeepsie, NY, F.D. Roosevelt High School, added 11 points on the day.
Cobleskill also received contributions from freshman swing-player Jessica Byerwalters, Coeymans Hallow, NY, Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk High School, who scored six points and grabbed six rebounds, senior point guard Trista Thomas, Brooklyn, NY, Erasmus Hall High School, who had six points and five assists and from senior forward April Ackermann, South Huntington, NY, Sullivan West High School, who had eight points on the day.
“I was pleased that we showed very few ill effects from the long trip,” said Fighting Tiger Head Coach Josh Suttles. “Our defense has been extremely consistent since we’ve returned from break but today I was impressed with our offense’s ability to knock down jump shots. We shot 50% from the field today which is one of our statistically better efforts of the season. We got our legs under us in the first half right from the start and then started the second half by hitting six of our first seven shots. After that, Shelley Pierson did a great job of controlling the paint on both ends of the floor as we did a good job of getting the ball inside. I’m now hoping that this is a sign that our offensive output will start to come along.”
The Fighting Tigers will return to the friendly confines of the Iorio Gymnasium on Tuesday evening February 5th when they will host the visiting Hawks of Mohawk Valley Community College for a Mountain Valley Conference contest to be played as part of a doubleheader with the Cobleskill men’s team versus the Hawks. The Cobleskill women will take to the court at 5:00 PM with the men’s game tentatively scheduled to tip-off at approximately 7:00 PM.
