FIGHTING TIGER WOMEN’S BASKETBALL POUNDS SCHENECTADY 54-21
After suffering an upset loss to SUNY Delhi on the road Monday night the SUNY Cobleskill women’s basketball program returned to the court with a vengeance on Thursday evening pounding visiting Schenectady Community College 54-21 in Mountain Valley Conference competition. The victory improves the Fighting Tigers overall record to 16-3 on the year including a 6-2 tally versus league opponents.
The visiting Royals had no answer for Fighting Tiger freshman center Shelley Pierson, Watervliet, NY, Watervliet High School, who filled the stat sheet in the contest posting a 17 point, eight rebound, three steal, three blocked shot, and two assist effort on the evening. Cobleskill also received fine all-around efforts from freshman forward Sharee Daniels, Poughkeepsie, NY, F.D. Roosevelt High School, with 10 points, four rebounds and three assists and from freshman swing-player Jessica Byerwalters, Coeymans Hallow, NY, Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk High School, who also reached double figures in scoring with 10 points to go with four rebounds on the evening.
The Fighting Tiger starting backcourt also turned in stellar performances as senior point guard Trista Thomas, Brooklyn, NY, Erasmus Hall High School, scored eight points, grabbed four rebounds, passed out four assists and made five steals on the night while freshman Katie Greene, Port Crane, NY, Harpursville High School, chipped in four points, six assists and an assist.
“This was a good way for us to bounce back from Monday night and I thought defensively we did a good job of holding them to only 21 points. But offensively we are not quite in synch since we’ve come back from break and are nowhere near the output we received during the first semester,” said Fighting Tiger Head Coach Josh Suttles. “Individually: Trista Thomas did a great job of pushing the tempo and distributing the basketball, Shelley Pierson was excellent on the boards and during the second half really controlled the paint both offensively and defensively and Sharee Daniels gave us a nice spark off the bench.”
Cobleskill will next be in action on Saturday February 2nd when they travel to Buffalo, NY to meet the Wildcats of Erie Community College at 3:00 PM. The team’s Sunday February 3rd game versus Niagara Community College in Sanborn, NY at 1:00 PM has been postponed due to facility availability. A potential make-up date will be released at a future time.
