In four years at the helm of the SUNY Cobleskill Fighting Tiger Women’s Basketball program Head Coach Josh Suttles has orchestrated one of the most startling transformations in the NJCAA and turned a perennial also-ran into a national power.
Taking over just prior to the start of the 2003-04 season, Suttles led the Fighting Tigers the best turnaround season in the country at the women's junior college level taking the program from a 3-23 season to a 13-13 record just narrowly missing a Region III Play-off bid. In 2004-05 under his direction the Fighting Tigers posted the best record in school history with a 22-6 overall mark advancing to the quarterfinals of the Region III Tournament for the first time in almost a decade. Subsequently Cobleskill bettered that record in 2005-06 posting a 24-5 overall mark and advancing to the Semifinals of the NJCAA Region III Division III Championships. The Orange & Black followed this up with a 22-7 season in 2006-07 and the program’s third consecutive NJCAA Tournament appearance. Cobleskill also finished the season with a number eighteen ranking in the year’s final NJCAA Division III National Poll. During his tenure at the college the program has amassed an overall record of 81-31 for a 72.3% winning percentage.
Individually Cobleskill players have been honored with: nine All-Mountain Valley Conference Team selections, six NJCAA Region III Division III All-Region Team honorees, three NJCAA Division III Academic All-American recipients and two NJCAA Division III All-American Team selections.
A native of Knoxville, TN, Suttles was a high school standout at Bearden High School on the basketball court and baseball diamond for the Bulldogs. Suttles went on to the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, MS where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Coaching & Sports Administration in 1997, his Bachelor of Science in Physical Education in 2000 and his Master of Science in Sports Administration in 2001. He served as an assistant in the Southern Mississippi Men’s Basketball program through the 2002 season before taking a position in the university’s Office of Admissions through 2003.
Suttles is a member of the college’s faculty teaching in SUNY Cobleskill’s Department of Physical Education, Recreation and Sports Studies where he holds the rank of assistant professor. |
