FIGHTING TIGER SOFTBALL POSTS SWEEP OVER FMCC 17-4 & 15-8
The SUNY Cobleskill women’s softball team traveled to Johnstown, NY on Thursday to sweep Fulton-Montgomery Community College in Mountain Valley Conference play by scores of 17-6 and 15-8. With the victories the Fighting Tigers even their season record at 4-4 overall including a 4-2 mark in league play.
“We were patient today and were able to take advantage of some errors,” said Fighting Tiger Head Coach Mary Irving. “It has taken some time but we are now starting to grow as a team.
In the opener, Cobleskill jumped out to a 6-1 first inning lead and never looked back riding the booming bats of: freshman third baseman Lauren Tinger, West Lebanon, NY, New Lebanon High School, who went 2-for-5 on the day with a double, four RBI and two runs scored, pitcher Danielle Lichwick, Westtown, NY, Minisink Valley High School High School, who was 3-for-5 in the contest with two RBI and three runs scored and freshman first baseman Casey Kelly, Walton, NY, Walton High School, who was 3-for-4 with a double three RBI and two runs scored.
In the second game the Fighting Tiger rallied from an 8-3 deficit over the last three innings to score 12 runs while holding the host Raiders scoreless during the run to secure the victory.
Once again third baseman Lauren Tinger was a major factor on offense going 2-for-5 with a double, three RBI and two runs scored while hurler Danielle Lichwick was 1-for-2 with three walks and three runs scored. Senior shortstop Anastasia Yakaboski, Calverton, NY, Riverhead High School, enjoyed a big day at the plate going 3-for-5 with a double and two runs scored as did first baseman Casey Kelly, who went 2-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored.
On the mound Danielle Lichwick recorded both victories allowing only two earned runs over five innings in the first game while striking out two and walking four then in the second game allowing four earned runs over seven innings striking out two and walking one.
The Fighting Tigers will next embark on a weekend road trip beginning on Saturday April 19th by traveling to Franklin, MA to meet the Bulldogs of Dean College for a doubleheader beginning at 2:00 PM then making the trip to Plattsburgh, NY on Sunday April 20th to meet the Cougars of Clinton Community College at 1:00 PM.
