Jake Scott

Jake Scott is entering his fifth season as the Head Men’s Basketball Coach at SUNY Cobleskill.  In his three years as head coach, he has an overall record of 43-58 and a 29-37 North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) record.  Coach Scott has improved his win total every year since he joined the Fighting Tigers for the 2016-17 season.

During the 2019-20 campaign he led the Fighting Tigers to a 16-9 overall record including a 10-6 mark in conference action with senior Antwan Claxton named to the All-NEAC first team and junior James Conteh earning second team All-NEAC honors.

In his third year in charge, Coach Scott led the Tigers to their first playoff birth since the 2014-15 season and his first as the head coach at Cobleskill.  The team finished with an overall record of 15-11 and 10-6 in conference.  Three of his players were selected to an all-conference team.  DaShown Nelson was named to the All-NEAC first team and Antwan Claxton and Anthony McNeil were named to the All-Neac third team.  Antwan Claxton picked up the honor of ECAC Men's Basketball North Division Player of the Month as well.  His team also excelled in the classroom and had eight student-athletes with an above 3.0 g.p.a.

Coach Scott's second year finished with an overall record of 8-17 and 5-11 in conference.  A highlight from the year was senior Malik Chambers scoring his 1000 point in a victory over Wells College.  Also, two of his student-athletes were named as the 2017-18 North Eastern Atlantic Conference Scholar-Athlete Award Recipients.

In his first year at the helm, Coach Scott finished with an overall record of 4-21 and 4-14 in the NEAC.  Highlights from the season included Joel Costello setting the Division 3 school record for points in a game while also being named Fighting Tiger of the Week 3 times.

During his time, Coach Scott has helped establish a community service project with Cobleskill Youth Basketball. Throughout the season, players and coaches from Cobleskill would work with local youth basketball players developing their basketball skills and educate the youth about the sport of basketball as well as local coaches.

Scott’s previous coaching experience came as the Head Coach at SUNY Maritime. In his fourth year with the program, Scott helped lead the team to eight victories on the year with all eight coming in league games. As a squad the team set program records for both assists in a season as well as blocks in a year while Patrick MacDonald '18 set the single-season mark for rebounds during the year. Following the season, MacDonald was a Skyline All-Conference First Team selection, Maritime's first since the 2011-12 campaign.

During his third season, he guided the team to six victories, doubling its win total from the year prior. Scott oversaw senior Sean Corley lead the Skyline in both assists and steals, while sophomore Isaiah Hayes was tops in the Skyline in blocked shots, with rookie Patrick MacDonald leading the league in field goal percentage in 2015. Senior T'Vaughn Gibson also reached 1,000 career points under the tutelage of Scott on February 14 against Purchase.

Scott came to Maritime after spending three seasons as an assistant basketball coach at the Rochester Institute of Technology.

While at RIT, Scott was responsible for planning team practices and also implemented a new off-season training program for the student-athletes. He also helped the basketball program by scouting and recruiting student-athletes. Scott has coached four All-Liberty League players: Justin Heisig, Scott Young, Anthony Terry and Brendan Harder.

After earning his bachelor’s degree in sport studies from St. John Fisher in 2005, Scott became a graduate assistant coach at Division I Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Va., under current Duke Associate Head Coach Jeff Capel. Scott developed scouting reports and helped in the recruiting aspect. In 2006, Scott earned his master’s degree from VCU in sport leadership.

Later in 2006, Scott became the junior varsity head coach at Atlee High School in Mechanicsville, Va. The following season, he earned the head varsity basketball coaching and athletic director positions at nearby Amelia Academy. He coached the squad to an 18-10 record and a second-place finish in the Virginia Commonwealth Conference and earned a quarterfinal appearance in the VISAA State Playoffs.

Scott is also a member of the NABC and BCANY basketball organizations.  Scott resides in Cobleskill, NY with his wife Caitlin.
