Keuka Park, N.Y.: The SUNY Cobleskill men's basketball team was out battled by host Keuka College in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) opener for both teams by a 50-47 margin on Saturday afternoon. The loss drops the Fighting Tigers to 1-7 overall with a 0-1 record versus league opponents while the Wolfpack improves to 4-3 overall with a 1-0 mark in NEAC action.
The Fighting Tigers trailed 48-45 with 14 seconds to play when senior guard
Alexis Nunez, White Plains, N.Y., White Plains High School, knocked down a short jumper to cut the lead to 48-47. Coming out of the ensuing time-out Cobleskill fouled senior guard Jared Wagner, Pittsford, N.Y., McQuaid Jesuit High School, who sank a pair of free throws to give the Keuka a 50-47 lead with 11 seconds remaining.
Freshman guard
Malik Chambers, West Point, N.Y., James I. O'Neil High School, had the first crack at tying the game from three-point range with five seconds remaining but his shot went long with
Alexis Nunez making an outstanding play to grab the offensive rebound and pitch it to freshman swingman
Taylor Sanders, Southampton, N.Y., Southampton High School, whose three-pointer with one second was off the mark giving the Wolfpack the hard fought conference victory.
Nunez was impressive in defeat for the Orange & Black as the senior guard scored a game high of 19 points to go with four rebounds, three assists and two steals on the afternoon.
The Fighting Tigers will get little time to rest as the team next travels to Aurora, N.Y. to face The Express of Wells College in NEAC play beginning at 2:00 p.m.
