MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The Morrisville State College women's soccer team picked up a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) victory Saturday afternoon, topping visiting SUNY Cobleskill 2-0 on Drake Field in Morrisville.
The win lifts Morrisville State to 2-3 overall, 1-1 in NEAC play. Cobleskill drops to 0-5 overall, 0-1 in conference action.
The visitors had a chance to get on the board in the third minute as a Morrisville State defender was whistled for a foul within the box to set up a penalty kick opportunity. The attempt from
Morganne Dick (Johnstown, N.Y.) was stopped by a diving Mustang keeper Angela Marriott (Peekskill, N.Y.) who sent the ball into the post and to the opposite side of the net. Marriott then rebounded from the save to make a point blank save on the right post to keep Cobleskill off the board.
The game remained scoreless until the 31st minute when freshman midfielder Jillian Hughes (Brookfield, N.Y.) collected her first collegiate score, chipping the pass across the box from Celia Abbott (Shortsville, N.Y.) past Fighting Tiger goalie
Miranda Rys (Turin, N.Y.), giving Morrisville State the 1-0 lead.
Cobleskill had a chance to even the score midway through the second half in a one versus goalie opportunity, but Marriott again had the outstretched hand and deflected the ball to keep the visitors scoreless.
Morrisville State secured the win late in the game with another collegiate first score, this time off the foot of senior Meaghan Pealo (Rochester, N.Y.) who launched the shot from outside the box into the upper left corner of the net.
Marriott earned the shutout with six stops for the Mustangs.
Rys posted the loss, turning away two in the first half, before being replaced by
Sabrina Adams (Oswego, N.Y.) in the second. Adams recorded three saves.
Morrisville State returns to the field tomorrow, traveling to nearby SUNY Polytechnic for a 2 p.m. conference start.
Cobleskill hosts Cazenovia at 2 on their home field.
