Men's Basketball Closes Out Semester With 80-66 Home Loss to Sage College

Second Half Turnovers Hurt Fighting Tigers in 80-66 Home Loss to Sage Gators


Cobleskill, N.Y.: The SUNY Cobleskill men's basketball team closed out the 2016 portion of their schedule on Saturday afternoon at the Iorio Gymnasium by falling to the Gators of Sage College by an 80-66 margin in non-conference play. With the loss, the Fighting Tigers close out the semester with a 0-10 overall record while the Gators will head into final exams with a 4-5 overall mark.

After a first half which featured six ties and seven lead changes the Gators took the lead for good at the 17:53 mark of the second half at 40-39 when junior center Barceem Dukes, Gloversville, N.Y., Gloversville High School, scored on a give-and-go from junior guard Wayne Weir, Bronx, N.Y., Samuel Gompers High School, eventually capitalizing on a 17-for-33, 51.5%, second half shooting effort to secure the victory.

Weir tallied a game high 20 points to lead the Gators while senior forward Marcus Patterson, Bronx, N.Y., Mount Saint Michael Academy, posted a double/double with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Sage also received 12 points and four assists from senior swingman Davon Sylvester, Bronx, N.Y., Cardinal Hayes High School, while senior guard Rob Mills, Newburgh, N.Y., Newburgh Free Academy, chipped in 10 points and three steals on the afternoon for the visitors.

Cobleskill was led in scoring by junior guard Malik Chambers, West Point, N.Y., James I. O'Neil High School, who had 17 points on the afternoon with senior swingman Joel Costello, Middleburgh, N.Y., Middleburgh High School/Tompkins-Cortland Community College, adding 13 points. Junior center/forward Christian Cooper, Gilboa, N.Y., Gilboa-Conesville High School, was also a factor for the Orange & Black with 13 points and four rebounds.

The Fighting Tigers will return to action after the winter break on Saturday January 14th when they travel to Aurora, N.Y. to face The Express of Wells College in North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) action beginning at 3:00 p.m.
