Men's Basketball Overpowers D'Youville Spartans 98-82 at Harold J. Brodie Tournament

Joel Costello's 42 Point Explosion Powers Fighting Tigers Past D'Youville College

Rochester, N.Y.: The SUNY Cobleskill men's basketball team displayed their offensive firepower on Sunday afternoon with a 98-82 win over the Spartans of D'Youville College in the Consolation Round of the 33rd Annual Harold J. Brodie Tournament hosted by Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) over the weekend. With the win the Fighting Tigers improve to 3-2 overall on the year while the Spartans fall to 2-3 on the season.

The Fighting Tiger backcourt proved to be the catalyst to the victory as senior swingman Joel Costello, Middleburgh, N.Y., Middleburgh High School/Tompkins-Cortland Community College, posted a season high of 42 points to go with six assists and five rebounds; connecting of 15-of-23 shots from the field including 4-of-6 from three-point range and 8-of-9 free throw attempts to lead the way, with senior guard Malik Chambers, West Point, N.Y., James I. O'Neil High School, chipping in 17 points along with five rebounds on the afternoon. Sophomore guard Devin Boyle, Johnstown, N.Y., Johnstown High School, was also a factor in the win continuing to be a valuable piece off the Cobleskill bench with 14 points and three rebounds.

The Cobleskill post players also made their presence felt in the victory as senior forward Christian Cooper, Gilboa, N.Y., Gilboa-Conesville High School, grabbed a game high 12 rebounds to go with four points and two steals while freshman Antwan Claxton, Bronx, N.Y., Taft High School, came off the bench to contribute: eight points, six rebounds, four steals and two blocked shots for the Orange & Black.

For his efforts at the tournament Joel Costello was named to the All-Tournament Team by the event's coaches and operational staff.

The Fighting Tigers will return to action on Wednesday November 29th when they host the Mustangs of Morrisville State College in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) opener for both programs with tip-off scheduled for 5:00 p.m. at the Fighting Tigers Iorio Gymnasium.

TIGER NOTES: Joel Costello's 42 point effort is the second most points scored by a Fighting Tiger player in the NCAA era as Costello hit for 43 points, the program's NCAA record, in the team's 84-75 road win at Cazenovia College on February 1, 2017. The overall program record for most points scored in a single game is 45 and is held by Andy Loder, Richmondville, N.Y., versus the University of Albany Junior Varsity in February of 1982.
