BENNINGTON, Vt. – SUNY Cobleskill seized control in the final 15 minutes Saturday afternoon to walk out of the Mountaineer Athletic Center with a 71-38 non-conference women's basketball win over Southern Vermont College.
The visitors were up 29-20 at halftime and maintained their separation through the opening few minutes of the third quarter. SVC would cut it down to just a four-point game midway through the stanza—only to see the Fighting Tigers go on a strong run to pull away and finish off the victory.
The Mountaineers (2-10) are now off until Thursday, January 4 when they host Mount Ida College at 1 p.m. for SVC's final non-conference game of the season. Cobleskill (6-4) returns to action Saturday, January 6 with a 2 p.m. tip-off at SUNY Canton.
Southern Vermont was paced by junior
Maddy Main (Bennington, Vt.) who notched 16 points, a game-high eight rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Freshman
Brenna Hudson (Malone, N.Y.) followed with 13 points and another eight boards while sophomore
Taylor Mallett (Berwick, Maine) had eight points in the effort. Sophomore
Dani Biggers (Broadalbin, N.Y.) had six assists and six rebounds on the day.
Sophomore
Addy Lawson (Cooperstown, N.Y.) led Cobleskill with a game-high 20 points, and she also had nine assists, six rebounds, and three steals in the win. Classmate
Gabby Muraczewski (Hamilton Square, N.J.) added 17 points and five boards while fellow sophomore
Stacey Sprague (Grand Gorge, N.Y.) chipped in with seven rebounds and six points. Freshman
DJ Miller-Peak (Utica, N.Y.) came off the Tigers' bench to notch seven rebounds in 10 minutes of reserve time.
Cobleskill went 32-65 (49.2 percent) from the floor while holding SVC to a 24.1 field goal percentage (13-54). The Fighting Tigers had a 50-30 upper hand in rebounds, and they outscored Southern Vermont 20-12 in points off turnovers.
Back-to-back Muraczewski scores started a 12-2 run for the visitors in the early minutes of the game, and baskets would go back-and-forth for their separation to be maintained. The Tigers closed out the first quarter with the final three buckets—two being Lawson swipe-and-scores—to bring a 20-8 lead into the second.
Main drilled a three to help keep her team close, and she would later hit another off a dish from Biggers to make it a 29-20 game with 1:13 to go in the half. Neither team would score before the intermission for the nine-point Cobleskill advantage to get carried into the third.
After Muraczewski and Lawson teamed up for back-to-back scores once play resumed, Main took another pass from Biggers and connected from downtown to bring the separation back into single digits. Hudson would then drop in a pair of layups for SVC to notch six unanswered points midway through the period and cut it to a 35-31 Cobleskill edge with 4:25 left on the clock. The Fighting Tigers closed out the third with a 12-3 run, however, with Lawson registering eight of those visitor points.
Cobleskill continued to push in the final 10 minutes—outscoring SVC 24-4 to pad its cushion and keep the Mountaineers from staging a comeback. Lawson tallied 14 of her points in the second half.
