Cobleskill, N.Y.: The SUNY Cobleskill women's basketball team celebrated Super Bowl Sunday in football fashion by grinding out a 52-46 hard hitting victory over the visiting Eagles of the College of Saint Elizabeth in North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) action. With the win the Fighting Tigers improve to 10-11 overall on the season including a 5-8 mark versus NEAC opponents while the Eagles fall to 7-13 overall with a 4-8 record in conference action.
With neither team converting outside shots, the Eagles shot just 23.8% from the floor and 5.3% from three-point range and the Fighting Tiger converted just 28.3% of their shots from the floor and just 13.3% from three-point range, the contest turning into a physical affair with each team attempting to pound the ball inside or take it off the dribble to the rim.
Then with Cobleskill leading 35-29 with 8:49 left to play, Fighting Tiger sophomore guard
Addy Lawson, Cooperstown, N.Y., Milford High School, was forced to the sidelines for the rest of the contest with a head injury.
With their top player sidelined, things looked bad for the home squad. However Cobleskill refused to back down as the Orange & Black continued to attack the basket forcing the Eagles to foul and then connecting on 10-of-17 free throws in the period and while digging in on defense holding the visitors to only 6-for-20 from the field including 0-for-7 from three-point range in the stanza to secure the victory.
Sophomore center
Stacey Sprague, Grand Gorge, N.Y., Roxbury High School, pick-up the slack in the Fighting Tiger attack posting a double/double with a team high 12 points and 11 rebounds while sophomore guard
Shaliyah Graham, Bronx, N.Y., Martin Luther King High School, grabbed a season high of 12 rebounds to go with nine points. Freshman guard Monique Britton, Westerlo, N.Y., Berne-Knox-Westerlo High School, was also a strong contributor to the win with seven points and four rebounds off the bench.
The Fighting Tigers will return to action on Wednesday evening when they host the Wildcats of Cazenovia College for a NEAC contest beginning at 7:00 p.m.
