SUNY Cobleskill Fighting Tigers in conjunction with the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), Intercollegiate Horse Shows Association (IHSA), and North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) have canceled the spring sports seasons due to the COVID-19 outbreak. In addition to the suspension of all spring season competition, SUNY Cobleskill has made the decision to suspend all athletic events and activities.
Â
"This is a sad day for our spring student-athletes and especially our seniors", said Director of Athletics
Marie Curran-Headley "Our number one priority remains the health and safety of our SUNY Cobleskill family and everyone involved. The decision made by the NCAA, IHSA, NEAC and SUNY Cobleskill was difficult, but it is the best decision to protect our student-athletes, our families and our fans."
Â
The cancellation affects the spring sports the hardest, which include Fighting Tiger baseball, softball, hunt seat equestrian, western equestrian, men's lacrosse and outdoor track & field regular seasons as well as non-traditional seasons for women's soccer, men's soccer and women's volleyball. More than 250 student athletes are directly affected by the cancellation.
Â
With regards to student-athlete eligibility, Dan Dutcher, NCAA Vice-President of Division III, announced on behalf of the Management and President's, "… eligibility, the committee approved a blanket waiver for all student-athletes participating in spring sports. The waiver will be in effect even if a school continues or restarts its spring season. In Division III, student-athletes have 10 semesters or 15 quarters to get in four seasons of participation. With this move by the committee, the 2020 spring semester will not count toward their 10 semesters or four seasons."
The IHSA is discussing the opportunity for our equestrian athletes to complete this season in conjunction with the upcoming 2021 championship season.
