Hackettstown, N.J.: The SUNY Cobleskill baseball team closed out their New Jersey weekend road trip on Sunday by splitting a doubleheader with the host Cyclones of Centenary University taking the first game by a score of 4-2 then losing in the nightcap by a 20-5 margin in games played on the turf at the Diamond of Dreams Complex. With the split the Fighting Tigers are now 8-5 overall on the season to date while the Cyclones are now 4-6 overall on the year.
In the first game the Fighting Tigers trailed 1-0 going into the top of the fourth inning, when junior center fielder
Eddy Garcia, Bronx, N.Y., World View High School, reached on a fielder's choice, stole second base, advanced to third on a ground out and scored on a passed ball to tie the game at 1-1.
Cobleskill then broke the contest open in the fifth inning capitalizing on a Cyclone defensive miscue to score three runs highlighted by a two-run single by junior right fielder
Nick Thomas, Scotia, N.Y., Scotia-Glenville High School/Hudson Valley Community College, Thomas finished the day going 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI for the visitors in the win.
The Fighting Tiger pitching staff turned in a strong effort in the win as junior
Jarrod Williams, Baldwinsville, N.Y., C.W. Baker High School/Finger Lakes Community College, earned the win going 6 2/3 innings allowing two unearned runs on seven hits, striking out six while walking three to even his record at 2-2 on the year.
Sophomore right hander
Manielvic Diplan, Peekskill, N.Y., Peekskill High School/Monroe College, then earned his second save of the season by retiring the final Centenary hitter with the bases loaded to end the contest.
In the second game, Cobleskill trailed going into the bottom of the sixth inning 8-5 when the Cyclones erupted for 12 runs to put the game out of reach and earn the split.
Junior right fielder
Nick Thomas continued his recent power surge going 1-for-3 with his sixth home run of the season while junior third baseman
Chris Kordziel, Rotterdam, N.Y., Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons High School/Hudson Valley Community College, was 2-for-2 with a RBI and a run scored and freshman designated hitter
Jack Miller, Oakland, N.J., Indian Hills High School, finished off a successful weekend trip by going 2-for-2 with two runs scored.
Junior lefty
Devin Lewis, Cobleskill, N.Y., Cobleskill-Richmondville High School, suffered the loss allowing eight runs, six of them earned, on 10 hits in 4 2/3 innings while walking three and striking out one.
The Fighting Tigers will next be in action on Sunday March 15
th when they travel to Port Charlotte, Fla to compete in the Snow Bird Classic meeting The College of Wooster in their opening game with first pitch scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
