With the cancellation of all spring sports due to COVID-19, we have decided to "catch up" with some our alumni and review their Fighting Tiger career as a student-athlete and accomplishments post-graduation.
Today, we are catching up with Kristen Olson (Raina), Class of 2011, who competed in women's soccer.
Hometown/High School: Granby, Mass./Granby High School
Degree: Bachelors of Technology Animal Science/Equine Studies
Current Occupation: Owner Operator Farmington Valley Express LLC
Kristen Olson (Raina):
Perhaps the greatest scorer in the history of Fighting Tiger women's soccer, Olson helped the program make the transition from the NJCAA to the NCAA ranks. Olsen helped Cobleskill advance to the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Championship Game in 2008 the program's initial season competing at the NCAA level.
During her career she was named to the All-Mountain Valley Conference Team in 2007, the NEAC First Team in 2008 and 2009 and the NEAC Third Team in 2010.
Upon graduating with a her degree in Animal Science / Equine Studies she took over the lease and management of the training and boarding facility she was interning at in Belchertown MA. She continued to manage and take care of 20+ horses over the course of seven years.
In 2016 she married fellow Cobleskill alumni Taylor Olson (Class of 2011 / AAS Diesel Technology)
In 2018, the Olsons started their own transportation company; Farmington Valley Express LLC. They currently have several contracts hauling milk and cream, cranes, equipment and precast concrete.
Kristen and Taylor currently live in Granby, Connecticut.
Why did you pick Cobleskill to continue your athletic career?
I was very set on majoring in Animal Science and there were not many colleges that offered a BT in Equine Studies; especially one that was very hands on with their curriculum. Most other schools I had looked at kept you in the classroom for the first two years of the program. Cobleskill's curriculum allowed students in the barns and working with animals on day one. When I was looking into Cobleskill the soccer program was still in the NJCAA Division III level. Coming from a small Division III High School I felt it would be a great transition allowing me to focus on academics while also playing soccer without some of the pressures of a higher division program.
What's your favorite memory as a Fighting Tiger?
I have so many memories that revolve around playing soccer at Cobleskill; I could tell you about certain goals scored, wins or losses but the best memories revolve around my teammates and the jokes and laughs that were shared. Crazy bus rides, game night dinners and sleepovers; I cherish these memories the most. It was also extremely special to be part of a team that transitioned from NCJAA to NCAA. It was exciting to be part of a more competitive program.
What's your favorite part about SUNY Cobleskill?
My favorite part about SUNY Cobleskill is the small campus. I loved that everything was in walking distance; especially having the equine facilities on campus vs off site which a lot of colleges do. I also loved that the classes were small and that you were able to get to know your professors and classmates.
Who has been the most influential and impactful coach in your athletic career?
I've had several amazing coaches over the years but the most impactful coach would have to be Mary Hamm. Coach Hamm was one of the first people I met when visiting the campus; she immediately made me feel comfortable and excited to be a part of her team. She constantly inspired and pushed us to be our best. She was extremely committed to each and every one of her players and because of that everyone was able to rise to their potential. She also strived to have a unified team – and she succeeded. The two years that Mary Hamm coached me were two of the best years I have had playing soccer and possibly two of the best teams. We may not have always had the strongest or most talented players but we were extremely successful because she taught us to work together using each of our strengths towards our team's goal.
Who was your favorite teacher at SUNY Cobleskill?
My favorite teacher would have to be Dr. Stephen Mackenzie. His enthusiasm for teaching and endless knowledge made each and every class enjoyable. He was extremely easy to get along with and was always willing to give a helping hand when needed.
Who were your favorite teammates?
Although I love everyone that I have played with over the years I was definitely closest to Sarah Hoffman and Elizabeth Goyette. On the field we knew where each other was without even having to look for them. There was just this connection that you couldn't explain. We started together as freshman and I was lucky enough to find lifelong friendships with them.
In a world where money doesn't exist, what's your dream job?
If money didn't exist, I would own a state-of-the-art equine facility and also own and manage a rescue facility for all types of animals. For as long as I can remember I have always wanted to work with animals and I have been extremely fortunate to have been able to do that for several years and would love to continue doing that.
What's your favorite part of your sport?
I love that soccer is a fast-paced game. You have to be constantly aware of everything going around you. There is no time to over think decisions; only quick thinking. Because of this you also have to have complete trust and understanding of your teammates to be able to work cohesively together. So, my favorite part of soccer is that it truly is a team sport.
What's your favorite sports to watch?
Soccer
Three Day Eventing / Horse Trials
NASCAR
Could you name three things on your bucket list?
Travel More – Hawaii, Italy, Alaska
Build Dream House and Farm
Own a large Sport Fishing Boat
What advice do you have for current Fighting Tiger student athletes?
My advice for current athletes would be to enjoy your sport! Celebrate your wins and/or personal bests but do not dwell on mistakes or losses. Make memories! The years go by fast so make time for your studies and for friends and family.
