Canton, N.Y.: After being rained out on Sunday afternoon the SUNY Cobleskill men's baseball team returned to SUNY Canton on Monday sweeping host Kangaroos in an important pair of North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Western Division contests by scores of 13-2 and 5-4. With the sweep the Fighting Tigers solidify their lead over the division standings improving to 9-4 overall including a division leading 7-3 record in league action while Canton is now 5-9 overall with a 3-5 NAC record.
The Fighting Tiger offense mauled the Kangaroos in the opener scoring 13 runs on 17 hits, including four doubles, to go with three walks and five stolen bases as the visitors used a six-run fifth inning to secure the victory.
Operating in the lead-off spot for the first time this season, senior centerfielder
Nick Thomas, Scotia, N.Y., Scotia-Glenville High School/Hudson Valley Community College, went 3-for-5 with a run scored and two RBI while junior shortstop
Eddy Garcia, Bronx, N.Y., World View High School, went 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored and a pair of RBI for Cobleskill.
The Orange & Black also received strong offensive efforts from freshman right fielder
Connor Maxwell, Newport, N.Y., West Canada Valley High School, who went 2-for-5 with a double, a run scored and two RBI and from senior third baseman
Chris Kordziel, Rotterdam, N.Y., Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons/Hudson Valley Community College, who went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Freshman pitcher
Stephen Tejada, Queens, N.Y., High School for Construction, was a dual threat in the game posting the victory by going 5 2/3 innings allowing only one earned run on four hits striking out eight and walking only one. Tejada was also productive at the plate going 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI.
In the nightcap, Cobleskill jumped out to a 3-2 lead after two innings then outbattled the determined Kangaroos to take the season series from the home team winning four-of-six contests.
Senior first baseman
Jarrod Williams, Baldwinsville, N.Y.,C.W. Baker High School, led the attack for the visitors going 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI with sophomore second baseman
Connor Mann, Hampstead, Md. Hereford High School, going 2-for-4 with a double and a RBI.
Sophomore southpaw
Chris Leavey, Kings Park, N.Y., Kings Park High School, earned the win to improve to 2-1 overall on the season by allowing two earned runs on five hits in four innings of work with relief help from
Jeremy Jenoure, Millbury, Mass., Millbury High School, who pitched a pair of scoreless innings in relief and from senior
Ethan Straub, Oswego, N.Y., Hannibal High School/Jefferson Community College, who earned the save by allowing one run on two hits to close out the contest.
The Fighting Tigers will next be in action on Wednesday April 28 when they host the Hawks of SUNY New Paltz for a pair on non-league contests at Fighting Tiger Field beginning at 12:00 p.m.
