SUNY Cobleskill Baseball Splits With SUNY Polytechnic in NAC Play

Fighting Tigers Clinch NAC Western Division Play-off Bid With Split Versus SUNY Poly

Cobleskill, N.Y.: The SUNY Cobleskill baseball team celebrated Mother's Day and Senior Day on Sunday by splitting a pair of North Atlantic Conference (NAC) contests with Western Division rival SUNY Polytechnic Institute winning the game in extra innings by a score of 5-2 in the first game then losing the nightcap by a 12-7 margin. With the split the Fighting Tigers move to 12-7 overall including a 10-4 conference record while the Wildcats are now 9-10 overall with an 8-7 record in NAC play. The split also clenched a spot in the NAC Western Division Championship series with a venue and an opponent still to be determined pending the completion of league play.

With the scored tied at 2-2 in regulation the Fighting Tigers weathered a Wildcats threat in the top of the eighth then went to work in the bottom of the frame as sophomore first baseman Frank Leger, Bronx, N.Y., All Hallows High School, drew a lead-off walk and went to second on a wild pitch at which point Cobleskill pinch ran junior River Sisson, Cobleskill, N.Y., Cobleskill-Richmondville High School, for Leger. The Wildcats then intentionally walked senior left fielder Jayson Maxwell, Newport, N.Y., Notre Dame High School. SUNY Poly then retired the next two hitters bringing up junior right fielder Samuel Gutierrez, Bayside, N.Y., Martin Van Buren High School/Queensborough Community College, with two outs and the game on the line.

On the second pitch of the at-bat, Gutierrez promptly cleared the fence in left-centerfield by 30 feet to put the game in the win column for the Orange & Black in walk-off fashion.

Gutierrez finished the game going 2-for-4 with a double, a homer and three RBI while freshman second baseman Stephen Tejada, Queens, N.Y., High School for Construction, went 2-for-3 with a run scored, an RBI and a stole base with Jayson Maxwell going 1-for-3 with a double, a run scored and an RBI.

Junior Devin Lewis, Cobleskill, N.Y., Cobleskill-Richmondville High School, got the win in relief going 3.1 innings striking out four and walking no one to improve to 4-1 overall on the season.

In the nightcap the Fighting Tigers held a 6-5 lead after five innings of play before the Wildcats struck for seven runs over the last two innings to record the win.

Designated hitter Stephen Tejada turned in a strong game at the plate going 4-for-4 with a double, an RBI, three stolen bases and three runs scored while junior shortstop Eddy Garcia, Bronx, N.Y., Word View High School, went 3-for-4 with a home run in the game. Left fielder Jayson Maxwell also turned in a strong effort offensively going 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI.

Cobleskill is tentatively scheduled to travel to Cazenovia, N.Y. to meet the Wildcats of Cazenovia College in NAC action beginning at 2:00 p.m.
