Canton, N.Y.: The SUNY Cobleskill men's basketball opened the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) road portion of their schedule on Saturday afternoon traveling to New York's North Country to grind out a win over the host Kangaroos of SUNY Canton by a 74-63 margin. With the win the Fighting Tigers move to 9-2 overall on the year including a 2-0 record in NAC action while the Kangaroos drop to 2-9 overall with a 1-2 mark in league play.
The Fighting Tigers broke a 32-32 tie at the half outscoring their hosts 42-31 in the second half as the Cobleskill defense once again provided the key to victory holding the Kangaroos to only 19-of-54, 32.2 %, from the field while forcing Canton into 21 turnovers on the afternoon to secure the win.
Junior center
Markel Jenkins, Elmira, N.Y., Elmira High School/Corning Community College, was the played a major role in the win controlling the paint posting his second double/double of the season with 16 points and 10 rebounds to go with a pair of blocked shots.
The Cobleskill backcourt was also active as junior guard
Iziah Pigott, Brooklyn, N.Y., Urban Assembly High School/Dutchess Community College, hit for 13 points, five, rebounds, three assists and three steals while sophomore swingman
JaNyve Smith, Albany, N.Y., Bishop Maginn High School, added 12 points, eight rebounds and four steals and junior guard
Andre Starks, Rochester, N.Y., Fairport High School/Corning Community College, scored nine points, to go with six steals and four rebounds on the day.
The visitors received strong bench play from first-year swingman
Shelvon Grant, Brooklyn, N.Y., Poughkeepsie High School, who scored nine points and passed out two assists and from first-year point guard
Quanire Greene, Albany, N.Y., Bishop Maginn High School, who scored five points to go with four rebounds and an assist.
Cobleskill will close out their weekend NAC road trip on Sunday when they travel to Johnson, N.Y. for a conference contest versus the host Badgers of Northern Vermont University-Johnson with tip-off scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
