Fighting Tiger Baseball Sweeps SUNY Poly in NAC Opening Doubleheader

Cobleskill Baseball Tops SUNY Poly Wildcats Twice to Open NAC Play


Oneonta, N.Y.: The SUNY Cobleskill men's baseball team opened their 2022 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) season on Sunday by sweeping a doubleheader from the host Wildcats of the SUNY Polytechnic Institute (SUNY Poly) coming from behind to take the opener 8-4 then once again coming from behind to take the nightcap 4-3 in games played on the turf of SUNY Oneonta due to field conditions at SUNY Poly. With the sweep the Fighting Tigers move to 10-11 overall including a 2-0 record in league action while the Wildcats fall to 2-14 overall with a 0-2 conference record.

In the first game Cobleskill trailed 5-4 heading into the top of the seventh inning when they erupted for four runs to decide the contest highlighted by a game tying double by senior right fielder Samuel Gutierrez, Bayside, N.Y., Martin Van Buren High School/Queensborough Community College, followed by a sacrifice fly off the bat of junior first baseman Frank Leger, Bronx, N.Y., All-Hallows High School, which gave the Fighting Tigers the margin of victory.

The Cobleskill offense showed excellent balance as Samuel Gutierrez went 2-for-3 with a double, two stolen bases, two runs scored and an RBI, first-year catcher Logan Hutter, Smithtown, N.Y., Smithtown West High School, went 3-for-4 with a double, a stolen base and an RBI, junior designated hitter Connor Maxwell, Newport, N.Y, West Canada High School, posted a 2-for-4 afternoon with a double, two RBI and a run scored and first year center fielder Zach Ducorsky, Oceanside, N.Y., Oceanside High School, went 1-for-3, with two stolen bases and two RBI.

Senior reliever Manielvic Diplan, Peekskill, N.Y., Peekskill High School/Monroe College, worked two scoreless innings to get the win in relief allowing one hit while striking out two and walking one to improve to 1-0 on the season.  
In the second game, the Fighting Tigers fell behind the home team 3-0 before tying the game in the top of the fifth on an RBI single by right fielder Samuel Gutierrez and an RBI fielder's choice by first baseman Frank Leger to knot the contest at 3-3.

Cobleskill then took the lead for good in the top of the sixth inning when senior second baseman Christopher Kordziel, Rotterdam, N.Y., Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons High School/Hudson Valley Community College, laced a two-out triple into center field to score center fielder Zach Ducorsky who had reached on an error.

Christopher Kordziel provided much of the punch on offense for the Orange & Black going 2-for-4 with a double, a triple, a run scored and the game-wining RBI while Samuel Gutierrez continued his hot hitting going 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.
First year right hander Aidan Maxwell, Newport, N.Y., West Canada High School, was dominate in relief to improve his record to 1-2 overall posting three scoreless innings allowing only two hits while striking out five and walking no one.

The Fighting Tigers will next be in action on Monday April 11 when the meet the Wildcats of SUNY Poly for a conference contest to be played at SUNY Oneonta beginning at 3:00 p.m. prior to returning home on Tuesday April 12 to close out their season series with the Wildcats for a pair of NAC home games to be played at Fighting Tiger Field with first pitch scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
