SUNY Cobleskill Baseball Falls to William Patterson 11-6 on Friday

Fighting Tiger Baseball Drops 11-6 Decision to William Patterson University

Wayne, N.J.: In an effort to beat the weekend's rainy forecast, the SUNY Cobleskill baseball team traveled south on Friday afternoon to drop a 11-6 decision to New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJCA) perennial power William Patterson University in non-league action. With the loss the Fighting Tigers fall to 4-9 overall on the season while the host Pioneers move to 11-5 overall on the year.

The Fighting Tigers trailed 2-0 in the top of the fourth when junior first baseman Chris Champlin, Jefferson, N.Y., South Kortright High School, ripped a run scoring double to left center field to tie the contest at two apiece. Cobleskill then took the lead when senior second baseman Frank Leger, Bronx, N.Y., All Hallows High School, singled to right scoring Champlin.

After the home team reclaimed the lead with two runs in the bottom of the fifth the Pioneers and extended their lead to 8-3 with four runs in the bottom of the seventh.

However, the Fighting Tigers would rally with three runs of their own in the top of the eighth inning highlighted by a run scoring single by sophomore third baseman Logan Hutter, Smithtown, N.Y., Smithtown West High School, and a two-run single off the bat of Chris Champlin to cut the home team's lead to 8-6.

But in the bottom of the inning the Pioneers put the contest out of reach victimizing the Fighting Tiger bullpen for three additional runs to secure the 11-6 margin of victory.

Chris Champlin led the visitors offensively going 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored and four RBI while sophomore left fielder Trevor Grieb, Red Hook, N.Y., Red Hook High School, went 3-for-4 with a run scored.

The Orange & Black will return to action on Monday April 3 when they travel to Oneonta, N.Y. to meet the Red Dragons of SUNY Oneonta for a non-conference game at Red Dragon Baseball Field beginning at 4:00 p.m.
