Fighting Tiger Baseball Sweeps Cazenovia College in NAC Action 6-5 & 8-7

Cobleskill Baseball Moves to 10-0 in NAC Action With Sweep of Cazenovia College

Cobleskill, N.Y.: The SUNY Cobleskill baseball team took a major step towards winning their third consecutive North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Western Division Championship on Tuesday by sweeping divisional rival Cazenovia College by scores of 6-5 and 8-7 at Fighting Tiger Field. With the sweep the Fighting Tigers move to 15-11 overall including a 10-0 record in NAC action while the Wildcats now fall to 6-24 overall with a 2-7 conference record.

Leading 6-1 going into the seventh inning the Fighting Tigers saw the visitors cut the lead to 6-5 with the bases loaded and only one out and Wildcat third baseman Xander Canfield, Schenectady, N.Y., Schenectady High School, coming to the plate.

Canfield lifted a medium deep flyball to centerfield and with Cazenovia catcher Brendan Mair, Ridge, N.Y., Longwood High School, tagging up and attempting to score the game-tying run.

However, Cobleskill sophomore centerfielder Zach Ducorsky Oceanside, N.Y., Oceanside High School, had other ideas on that as he unleashed a laser throw to sophomore catcher Logan Hutter, Smithtown, N.Y., Smithtown High School, who applied the tag on the runner to end the contest and secure the win.

Offensively the home team was led by junior shortstop David Flora, Windsor, N.Y., Windsor High School/Herkimer Community College, who went 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI, sophomore first baseman Chris Champlin, Jefferson, N.Y., South Kortright High School, who was 1-for-2 with a stolen base, a run scored and an RBI and junior second baseman Stephen Tejada, Queens, N.Y., High School for Construction, who was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Logan Hutter also contributed at the plate going 2-for-2 with two runs scored.

Junior left hander Chris Leavey, Kings Park, N.Y., Kings Park High School, notched the win going six innings with three strikeouts to improve to 2-0 on the year with relief help from junior right hander Jason Treffiletti, Cohoes, N.Y., Shaker High School, coming in to notch his first save of the season.

In the nightcap the Fighting Tigers jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run double by shortstop David Flora who then scored on a single by right fielder Logan Hutter.

After the Wildcats cut the lead to 3-2 in the top for the third, the home team once again pushed three runs across the plate highlighted by a run scoring single by sophomore catcher Dylan Pohl, East Meadow, N.Y., East Meadow High School, to make it 6-2.

In the fourth inning Cazenovia scored twice in the top half of the frame only to have the Orange & Black score a pair of runs of their own to extend the lead to 8-4 capped off on a run scoring triple by junior left field Matthew Snyder, Latham, N.Y., Shaker High School.

The Wildcats cut the lead to 8-7 in the sixth inning with their eyes on pulling the upset in the final frame.

However junior reliever Jordan Stone, Cohoes, N.Y., Cohoes High School, entered the contest and promptly ended the Wildcats afternoon retiring the side in order on two pop ups and a flyout to end the game and earn his second save of the year helping first-year starter Tanner Wood, Glenville, N.Y., Niskayuna High School, move his season record to 2-0 after allowing three earned runs in four innings striking out four while walking only one.

At the plate, David Flora continued to shine gong 1-for-2 with a double, two runs scored and two RBI along with Matthew Snyder who went 2-for-4 with a triple a run scored and an RBI. Logan Hutter was also a factor with his bat going 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored and an RBI with Dylan Pohl going 2-for-3 with an RBI.

The Fighting Tigers will next be in action on Thursday April 20 when the meet the Dutchmen of Union College in a game to be played at Shuttleworth Park in Amsterdam, N.Y. at 6:00 p.m.
