SUNY Cobleskill Out Slugs SUNY Oneonta 17-15 in Non-Conference Action

Fighting Tigers Come From Nine Runs Down to Defeat SUNY Oneonta 17-15

Cobleskill, N.Y.: The SUNY Cobleskill baseball team roared back from a late nine-run deficit to post a 17-15 comeback win over the visiting Red Dragons of SUNY Oneonta in non-league action at Fighting Tiger Field on Wednesday afternoon. With the victory the Fighting Tigers improve to 19-12 overall while the Red Dragons fall to 22-10 on the year.

Trailing 12-3 heading into the home half of the fifth inning the Fighting Tigers scored nine times to tie the game at 12-12 then took the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning on a five-run frame highlighted by a two-run double by sophomore first baseman Chris Champlin, Jefferson, N.Y., South Kortright High School, and a two-run single by Stephen Tejada, Queens, N.Y., High School for Construction, to make it 17-12.

The Red Dragons cut the lead to 17-15 in the top of the seventh inning but after that was as close as they could come with the game called due to rain and darkness after Cobleskill scored four more time with no one out in the inning with the score reverting to the top half of the inning.

Offensively Chris Champlin led the Fighting Tiger offensive attack going 4-for-4 with a double, three runs scored and five RBI while Tejada was 3-for-4 with two-runs scored and four RBI. Sophomore centerfielder Zach Ducorsky, Oceanside, N.Y., Oceanside High School, continued his hot hitting going 4-for-4 with two stolen bases, two runs scored and an RBI while senior third baseman Frank Leger, Bronx, N.Y., All Hallows High School, went 2-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and two RBI.

Sophomore Caleb Clements, Prattsburgh, N.Y., Prattsburgh High School, worked 1.1 innings to get the victory to even his record at 1-1 on the season with sophomore Jack Laughlin Cortlandt Manor, N.Y., Walter Panas High School, recording the final two outs to get his first save of the year.

The Fighting Tigers will next be in action on Friday April 28 when they return to Fighting Tiger Field to close out the 2023 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) season with a pair of games versus the SUNY Canton Kangaroos scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
