Men’s Basketball Drops Tight Contest to Mount Saint Mary College, 73-69

Green’s Career-High 25 Points and Wheeler’s Double-Double Not Enough in 73-69 Road Loss

Newburgh, NY: The SUNY Cobleskill men's basketball team battled hard but ultimately fell to Mount Saint Mary College, 73-69, in a close road matchup.

Quanire Greene (Albany, NY/Bishop Maginn) was electric for the Tigers, dropping a career-high 25 points on 8-for-17 shooting, including 3-for-8 from downtown, and a perfect 6-for-6 from the line. Green also added four rebounds, four assists, and two steals in a well-rounded performance. Jermaine Wheeler (Manhattan, NY/Marist) notched his second double-double of the season, tallying 13 points and ten boards along with a block and a steal. Elijah Morris (Mount Vernon, NY) chipped in 11 points, five assists, and four rebounds, while Chace Peterson (Troy, NY) contributed seven points on efficient 3-for-4 shooting, along with four rebounds.

Both teams were close from the field, with Cobleskill shooting 41.3% and Mount Saint Mary slightly lower at 38.1%, but the Knights made Cobleskill pay from beyond the arc, hitting 40.9% compared to Cobleskill's 17.9%. Cobleskill barely edged Mount Saint Mary in rebounding, 44-43, but struggled with 16 turnovers, leading to 20 points for the Knights.

In the first half, Cobleskill quickly responded to an early deficit, with Green's three-pointer giving them a 15-12 lead, assisted by Morris at the 14:25 mark. A layup by Wheeler, again assisted by Morris, extended Cobleskill's lead to 19-12 with 13:38 left in the half. Cobleskill held their ground until Mount Saint Mary tied it at 34-34 with under three minutes to play, and a late three-pointer by Green brought them back within one as they headed into halftime.

The second half stayed neck-and-neck, with Cobleskill pulling within two at 49-51 after Wheeler's emphatic dunk, assisted by Green, at the 10:45 mark. However, the Knights answered with a 10-2 run, highlighted by a clutch three-pointer from Connor Cyran. Though Green's late layup cut the lead to just two, Mount Saint Mary held on with timely free throws to secure the win in the final moments.

Cobleskill will look to bounce back as they host Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Saturday, November 23, at 1:00 p.m. in the Iorio Gymnasium.
