Oneonta, NY: The SUNY Cobleskill women's basketball team erupted in the second half to pull away from SUNY Oneonta, claiming a commanding 67-44 non-conference win on Tuesday night at Dewar Arena. The Fighting Tigers outscored the Red Dragons 41-22 in the final two quarters, fueled by outstanding performances from their senior leaders.
Cobleskill's offense was spearheaded by its senior trio.
Taylor Meacham (Berne, NY/Berne-Knox-Westerlo) delivered 17 points, nine rebounds, and two steals, narrowly missing a double-double., while shooting an efficient 6-11 from the field and 5-6 from the line.
Logan Thayne (Hoosick Falls, NY) extended her remarkable streak to seven consecutive double-doubles, finishing with 17 points, 10 rebounds, and a steal while shooting a perfect 8-for-8 from the line.
Antonia May (Amsterdam, NY) added 16 points, including 4-for-8 from beyond the arc, and grabbed five rebounds. Together, the trio accounted for 50 of the team's 67 points.
The Fighting Tigers dominated statistically, shooting 36.1% from the field compared to Oneonta's 24.6% and an impressive 94.4% at the free-throw line. Cobleskill outrebounded Oneonta 41-34 and forced 15 turnovers, converting them into 18 points. They also held a 26-22 edge in points in the paint and knocked down six three-pointers to Oneonta's two. Cobleskill led for all but two minutes of the game.
After a closely contested first half with Cobleskill clinging to a 26-22 advantage, the Fighting Tigers broke the game open in the third quarter. May drilled two early threes, and Meacham's layup, set up by Thayne, pushed the lead to 40-26 at the 5:40 mark. Cobleskill outscored Oneonta 20-10 in the quarter, with May tallying 10 points, to take a commanding 46-32 lead into the final frame.
The Fighting Tigers maintained their intensity in the fourth, limiting Oneonta to 12 points while scoring 21. A May three-pointer, assisted by
Cara Walker (Phelps, NY/Midlakes), stretched the lead to 61-38 with 4:23 left.
Amber MacNeil's (Hoosick Falls, NY) jumper kept the margin at 23 points with just over two minutes to play, and Thayne's two free throws sealed the win at 67-44.
Cobleskill will aim to continue their momentum when they host Union College on Saturday, November 30, with tip-off at 1:00 p.m. in the Iorio Gymnasium.
