Auburndale, Fla.: The SUNY Cobleskill baseball team suffered a sweep on Tuesday at the 2024 RussMatt Central Florida Invitational at the claws of the Golden Eagles of SUNY Brockport by scores of 12-0 and 4-0. With the defeats the Fighting Tigers fall to 3-12 overall on the season to date while the Golden Eagles move to 8-3 overall on the campaign.
In the opener the Fighting Tigers once again struggled defensively committing seven errors while failing to solve Golden Eagle pitching scratching out a mere three singles in the contest.
Junior second baseman
Stephen Tejada, Queens, N.Y., High School for Construction Technology, continued his strong showing at the plate going 1-for-2 while senior shortstop
David Flora, Windsor, N.Y., Windsor High School/Herkimer Community College, also went 1-for-2 with a stolen base.
In the nightcap the two teams battled to a scoreless tie through 5 ½ innings as Fighting Tiger first-year right hander
Tyler Scorzelli, Latham, N.Y., Colonie High School, blanked the Golden Eagles for five innings on three hits while striking out three hitters.
However, Brockport loaded the bases against the Fighting Tiger bullpen in the bottom of the sixth and with no outs the Golden Eagles sent up first-year infielder Steven Ciancio III, Poughkeepsie, N.Y., Spackenkill High School, to pinch hit and the rookie promptly hit the ball out of the park for a game winning grand slam home run.
Once again, the Fighting Tiger offense was held to only five singles in the game with second baseman
Stephen Tejada going 2-for-2 and shortstop
David Flora going 2-for-3 with a stolen base.
Cobleskill will return to action at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational on Thursday March 21 when they meet the nationally ranked number two Gulls of Endicott College for a solo contest with first pitch slated for 10:00 a.m.
