SUNY Cobleskill Baseball Sweeps Eastern Nazarene College 9-8 and 10-9

Fighting Tiger Baseball Posts Dramatic Comeback Wins to Sweep Eastern Nazarene in NAC Doubleheader

Quincy, Ma.: In the opening of a series that could have major implications on the North Eastern Conference (NAC) play-off picture the SUNY Cobleskill baseball team took to the road on Friday afternoon to post a pair of comeback wins to sweep a doubleheader from the Lions of Eastern Nazarene College (ENC) by scores of 9-8 and 10-9 in games played at the Adams Field. With the sweep the Fighting Tigers are now 11-17 overall with a 7-1 record in NAC play to move into first place in the NAC Western Division while the Lions fall to 6-17-1 overall including a 4-4 record in league action.

In the first game the Fighting Tigers trailed 5-2 going into the fifth inning as the Lions took advantage of a four of the nine errors Cobleskill made in the contest. It was at that point the Cobleskill bats woke up as the Orange & Black erupted for seven runs highlighted by two run singles by senior right fielder Samuel Gutierrez, Queens, N.Y., Martin Van Buren High School/Queensborough Community College, and junior centerfielder Zach Ducorsky, Oceanside, N.Y., Oceanside High School, that gave the visitors a 9-5 advantage.

The Lions then posted three runs in the sixth to make it 9-8 Cobleskill going into the seventh inning but with the game on the line junior reliever Franklin Caminero, Bronx, N.Y., A.P. Randolph High School/Monroe Community College, took the mound and retired the side to post his first save of the season.

At the plate Cobleskill was led by Zach Ducorsky who went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, two RBI and a run scored, senior designated hitter Matthew Snyder, Latham, N.Y., Shaker High School, who was 3-for-3 with a double, a triple, two runs scored and an RBI and by Samuel Gutierrez who was 1-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI.

In the second game the Lions once again got off to a fast start jumping out to an 8-2 lead after four innings before Cobleskill began another comeback scoring three runs in the fifth and four runs in the sixth to enter the contest tied at 9-9 heading into the seventh inning.

The Fighting Tigers then scored the winning run when junior second baseman Stephen Tejada, Queens, N.Y., High School for Construction Technologies, walked with the bases loaded and two outs to drive in sophomore left fielder Logan Firment, Andes, N.Y., South Kortright High School, who had also walked, with the eventual game winner.

With both offenses pounding the ball throughout the contest Fighting Tiger senior reliever Jason Treffiletti, Cohoes, N.Y., Shaker High School, played the role of fireman cooling off the red-hot Lions' offense over the final three innings allowing only one unearned run on two hits while striking out four and walking only one to improve to 3-1 overall on the season.

At the plate Stephen Tejada operating in the lead-off spot was the team's catalyst going 3-for-4 with a walk, a stolen base, a double, three runs scored and four RBI in the win while right fielder Samuel Gutierrez stayed hot with the bat going 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI.

The two teams will close out the weekend series on Saturday April 20 with a doubleheader at Austin Prep in Reading, Massachusetts beginning at 12:30 p.m.
