Saratoga Springs, N.Y.: The SUNY Cobleskill baseball team took to the road once again on Tuesday afternoon ending a seven-game losing streak by defeating the host Thoroughbreds of Skidmore College by a 9-6 tally in non-conference action. With the win the Fighting Tigers are now 4-15 overall on the year while the Thoroughbreds fall to 10-8.
Trailing 6-5 after six innings, the Fighting Tigers took the lead for good in the top of the seventh innings with a pair of runs, tying the game on a pinch hit run scoring single off the bat of senior
Samuel Gutierrez, Queens, N.Y., Martin Van Buren High School/Queensborough Community College, then taking the lead with an RBI walk from first-year catcher
Zach Papanikolatos, Patchogue, N.Y., Patchogue-Medford High School, that made it 7-6 Cobleskill.
Cobleskill then cemented the victory in the eighth inning with a pair of insurance runs on RBI singles from senior shortstop
David Flora, Windsor, N.Y., Windsor High School/Herkimer Community College, and
Samuel Gutierrez that made it 9-6.
First-year reliever
Ryan Lansing, Cooperstown, N.Y. Cooperstown High School, celebrated his return from the injury list to post the victory working 2/3 of an inning of scoreless relief with sophomore
Logan Firment, Andes, N.Y., South Kortright High School, coming in from left field to earn the save hurling a scoreless final inning striking out two to secure the victory.
At the plate
Samuel Gutierrez was 2-for-2 off the bench with a pair of RBI and a stolen base while
David Flora was 2-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI with
Logan Firment going 2-for-4 to go with a double and an RBI.
Cobleskill centerfielder
Zach Ducorsky, Oceanside, N.Y., Oceanside High School, operating in the lead-off spot was also a factor in the win going 2-for-4 with a triple, two stolen bases, two runs scored and an RBI on the afternoon.
The Fighting Tigers are tentatively scheduled, weather permitting, to next be in action on Friday April 5 when they host the Kangaroos of SUNY Canton in their North Atlantic Conference (NAC) home opener at Fighting Tiger Field with first pitch scheduled for 3:00 p.m. prior to a Saturday, April 6, NAC doubleheader with the Kangaroos beginning at 12:00 p.m.
