Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Volleyball Drops Non-Conference Match 3-0 to Worcester St.

Kathleen Smart leads the Tigers with 15 digs and eight kills

Springfield, MA: The SUNY Cobleskill women's volleyball team was swept by Worcester State on Saturday afternoon at the Alumni Healthful Living Center on the campus of Western New England University. The Fighting Tigers were unable to secure a set, losing 25-13, 25-19, and 25-21. With this defeat, Cobleskill falls to 3-12 on the season.

Kathleen Smart (Nashville, Tenn./Pope John Paul II Prep) led the Cobleskill offense with 8 kills, though she also recorded 10 errors on 36 total attacks. Baylee Kirschberg (Lindenhurst, NY) added 6 kills, while Hallie Gasner (Middleburgh, NY) contributed 5 kills and a service ace. Defensively, Jojo Haycock (Bowie, Md) collected 15 digs, while Jade Ward (Miami, FL/Felix Varela) handed out 17 assists and recorded 10 digs.

The Fighting Tigers were without several players due to injury and struggled offensively, finishing with a hitting percentage of just .038 compared to Worcester State's .190. Despite their efforts and resilience, the Cobleskill couldn't capitalize on key moments in the match.

In the first set, Cobleskill jumped out to an early7-5 led thanks to some great service from Mea Kizer (Brooklyn, NY/Middletown), but Worcester found their groove and went on a 7-0 run to build a 12-7 lead.  The Tigers attempted to mount a comeback, but the Lancers won the first set 25-13.

The second set saw both teams trade early runs before Cobleskill claimed a 14-11 lead due to a Smart kill, assisted by Ward.  With the set tied at 19-19, the Lancers pounced on their momentum and exploded for a six-point unanswered run to take the set 25-19.  In the third and final set, Cobleskill once again found themselves with a lead, 16-14, before Worcester used a 4-0 run to reclaim the lead 18-16.  The Tigers fought back, thanks to kills by Gasner and Wright, but the Lancers kept Cobleskill's attacks at bay and finished the set with a 25-21 win.

Cobleskill returns to action on Wednesday, October 2nd, as they welcome Bard College to the Iorio Gymnasium for a 6:00 p.m. non-conference home match.
