Cobleskill Edged by Husson in NAC Thriller, 75-70

Logan Thayne notched NCAA leading 15th double-double

Bangor, ME: The SUNY Cobleskill women's basketball team dropped a hard-fought contest on the road, falling 75-70 to Husson University in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action on Saturday afternoon.

Senior center Logan Thayne (Hoosick Falls, NY) delivered a dominant performance, notching her NCAA-leading 15th double-double of the season. Thayne tallied a game-high 19 points and 20 rebounds (10 offensive, 10 defensive), adding three assists, two blocks, and a steal in 34 minutes. She shot 7-of-19 from the floor and connected on 2-of-3 from beyond the arc. Fellow senior Cara Walker (Phelps, NY/Midlakes) contributed 18 points, nine rebounds, and two assists, while Taylor Meacham (Berne, NY/BKW) chipped in 13 points, six rebounds, a block, and a steal. Antonia May (Amsterdam, NY) added seven points, six rebounds and two assists.

Cobleskill (15-3, 5-1 NAC) shot 38.3 percent from the field, slightly trailing Husson's 41.5 percent. The Fighting Tigers held a significant edge from three-point range, hitting 39.1 percent (9-of-23) compared to the Eagles' 18.2 percent (2-of-11). However, free throws proved to be a hurdle as Cobleskill shot just 62.5 percent (15-of-24), while Husson excelled with an 82.6 percent mark (19-of-23). Cobleskill dominated the boards with a 47-33 rebounding advantage, including 16 offensive rebounds that generated 16 second-chance points. Turnovers, however, became the deciding factor; Cobleskill committed 21 compared to Husson's eight, allowing the Eagles to score 25 points off turnovers. Husson's bench also made a significant impact, outscoring Cobleskill's reserves 29-11.

The Fighting Tigers opened the game with a bang, racing to a 12-2 lead just four minutes in. A three-pointer from Thayne, set up by Antonia May, highlighted the hot start. Annie Canales (North Adams, MA/Hoosac Valley) extended the lead to 24-13 with a deep triple, assisted by Talia Washington (Schenectady, NY). Cobleskill carried a 26-15 advantage into the second quarter.
Husson responded in the second period, capitalizing on a cold stretch from the Cobleskill offense with a 10-0 run over four minutes to cut the lead to 31-25. Walker broke the drought with two free throws to push the lead to 33-25, but the Eagles stayed persistent, closing the gap to 36-31 at halftime.

In the third quarter, Cobleskill rebuilt its lead, going up 45-36 after a May three-pointer assisted by Walker. The Tigers maintained control for much of the period, leading by as many as 13 points. However, Husson rallied late in the quarter, stringing together seven unanswered points to pull within 56-50.

The fourth quarter turned into a tense, back-and-forth battle. Husson quickly trimmed the deficit to 56-54, but a timely three-pointer from Canales pushed Cobleskill's lead back to 63-58 with 6:20 remaining. The Eagles surged ahead for the first time at the 4:00 mark, taking a 64-63 lead. Despite the Tigers' efforts and determination, Husson capitalized on key baskets and crucial Cobleskill turnovers in the final minutes to secure the win.

Cobleskill returns to action tomorrow, January 19, as they travel to Maine Maritime Academy for a 1:00 p.m. NAC battle.
