Farmington, ME: The SUNY Cobleskill men's basketball team fell on the road to the University of Maine at Farmington, 89-71, on Tuesday night in North Atlantic Conference action.
Chrischen Chung (Poughkeepsie, NY/LaSalle) led the Fighting Tigers with 16 points, four assists, and three rebounds. Senior
Chalik Rush (Brooklyn, NY/Graphic Arts) contributed 12 points, four rebounds, four steals, and three assists, while fellow senior
Devin Dennard (Elmira, NY) added 10 points, hitting two three-pointers.
Tristian George (Mount Vernon, NY) also scored 10 points, grabbing three rebounds and one steal.
Elijah Morris (Mount Vernon, NY) chipped in with eight points, four rebounds, two assists, and two blocks.
Despite a spirited effort, Cobleskill struggled to contain UMaine-Farmington's hot shooting. The Tigers shot 43.9% from the field, while the Beavers connected on an impressive 57.6%. From beyond the arc, Cobleskill managed 36.4%, but UMaine-Farmington dominated with a 56.0% conversion rate. The Beavers also controlled the glass, outrebounding Cobleskill 32-27, which limited the Tigers' second-chance opportunities. Both teams scored 12 second-chance points, but the Beavers' size advantage led to a 34-28 edge in points in the paint.
UMaine-Farmington jumped out to a 23-11 lead before a three-pointer from Dennard, assisted by
Adrian Beato (Beacon, NY), cut the deficit to 23-14 with 11 minutes left in the half. Cobleskill responded with a 10-0 run, fueled by solid free-throw shooting and a three-pointer by
Tristian George, narrowing the gap to 34-30 with two minutes remaining. However, the Beavers regained control and entered halftime with a 42-32 lead.
The Beavers started the second half strong, extending their lead to 51-32 just two minutes in. Cobleskill made a push with back-to-back three-pointers by Rush and Dennard, sparking an 8-0 run to reduce the lead to 69-56 with under 10 minutes to play. UMaine-Farmington found their rhythm again, extending their advantage to 86-65 with three minutes left, sealing the victory.
The Fighting Tigers return to action on Monday, January 13, as the host University of Maine at Presque isle at 3:00 p.m. in a NAC contest.
