Farmington, ME: The SUNY Cobleskill Fighting Tigers Women's Basketball remained undefeated in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) play with a hard-fought 65-59 victory over UMaine-Farmington on Tuesday night to improve to 14-2 overall.
The Fighting Tigers were led by senior
Antonia May (Amsterdam, NY) with 17 points, nine rebounds, three assists, three blocks, and two steals. Fellow senior
Taylor Meacham (Berne, NY/BKW) notched a double-double with 14 points, 10 rebounds, five steals, and two assists while shooting 5-for-12 from the field.
Annie Canales (North Adams, MA/Hoosac Valley) added 14 points, including key three-pointers, while
Cara Walker (Phelps, NY/Midlakes) contributed 13 rebounds, six points, four assists, and a block. Sophomore center
Mady Victorin (Menands, NY/Shaker) provided a strong defensive presence with 10 rebounds, four blocks, and four points.
Cobleskill narrowly edged Farmington in field goal percentage (32.0% to 31.7%), but the Beavers excelled from beyond the arc, hitting 34.5% of their three-point attempts compared to Cobleskill's 22.2%. The Fighting Tigers dominated the boards with a 53-49 rebounding advantage, including 16 offensive rebounds. They capitalized on the Beavers 17 turnovers, converting them into 17 points, while committing just 10 turnovers themselves. Cobleskill's dominance in the paint was another key factor, outscoring Farmington 34-20. On the defensive end, the Tigers recorded 10 steals and 10 blocks.
The Tigers established control early, opening the first quarter with a 10-3 lead following a layup by Walker at the 6:21 mark. Meacham extended the lead to 15-6 with a layup under four minutes remaining in the quarter. A three-pointer by Canales, assisted by
Kyra Pence (Randolph, NY), closed the period with Cobleskill ahead 20-11.
Farmington pushed back in the second quarter. After Canales knocked down another three-pointer to give Cobleskill a 25-17 lead, the Beavers responded with a surge to tie the game at 27-27. Farmington took its first lead, 30-28, with 1:43 left in the half and carried that advantage into the break.
The third quarter saw back-and-forth action, with Farmington maintaining a slim 40-34 lead midway through. Cobleskill answered with an 8-0 run, highlighted by Victorin's layup and a pair of free throws from May, cutting the deficit to 45-44. The Beavers held a narrow 46-44 lead heading into the final period.
Canales opened the fourth quarter with a three-pointer to reclaim the lead for Cobleskill. Meacham followed with a clutch three-pointer, assisted by May, to pull the Tigers within one at 53-52. Pence then scored a go-ahead layup to make it 54-53. May sealed the game with a pivotal layup, extending the Tigers' lead to 59-53 with under two minutes remaining. The Tigers used clutch free throw shooting to give them a 65-59 win.
The Fighting Tigers will return to action on Monday, January 13, hosting the University of Maine-Presque Isle at 1:00 p.m. in the Iorio Gymnasium.
