Morel’s All-Around Night Not Enough in Tigers’ 100–91 Setback to Lyndon

Morel led the Tigers with 16 points, eight assists, six rebounds, four blocks and a steal

Cobleskill, NY – The Tigers put together one of their most balanced offensive outings of the season with four players in double figures, but Lyndon's late-game surge proved the difference as SUNY Cobleskill fell 100-91 at home on Friday night.

Rowan Morel (Manhattan, NY) put together his most complete performance of the season, finishing with 16 points, eight assists, six rebounds, four blocks and a steal while going 6-of-13 from the floor and 2-of-4 from beyond the arc. Off the bench, Spencer Daby (Au Sable Forks, NY) gave Cobleskill a major spark with 15 points and four boards. Marquay Tanksley (Cohoes, NY) recorded a hard-earned double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds while adding two blocks and two steals, and Andrew Wright (Berne, NY) chipped in 13 points and seven rebounds. Adrian Beato (Beacon, NY) added nine points off the bench.

Cobleskill shot 43 percent from the field (34-79) and 29.6 percent from deep (8-27), while Lyndon countered with a hot shooting night at 52.5 percent overall and 58.3 percent from three. The Tigers controlled the glass in a big way, outrebounding the Hornets 58-36 - including a dominant 31-8 advantage on the offensive boards - and forced 32 turnovers that led to 21 points. However, Cobleskill struggled against Lyndon's press, committing 21 turnovers that the Hornets converted into 45 points - ultimately the difference in the game.

Cobleskill came out firing, racing to a 14-3 lead in the opening five minutes behind threes from Morel and Tanksley and strong finishes at the rim from Wright. A Beato three and a free throw from Conor Holland (Marathon, NY) kept the Tigers up 22-12 midway through the half. Lyndon responded with a surge to tie the game at 25–25 and eventually took a 31-26 lead with 6:41 left, but Cobleskill punched back. A mid-range jumper from Daby tied it at 36-36, and a Beato jumper briefly put the Tigers back on top with 1:40 remaining. Lyndon closed the half on an 8-3 run to take a 46-43 lead into the locker room.

Morel opened the second half with a jumper, and Tanksley drilled a three to pull the Tigers even at 52-52. Cobleskill then strung together a 12-4 run to reclaim momentum and build a 61-56 advantage, later stretching the lead to 67-60 after a Tanksley finish at the rim with 11:47 to play. A Wright layup maintained a 78-71 cushion with eight minutes left, but Lyndon countered with a 13-2 run to jump ahead 84-80.

Cobleskill kept swinging, tying the game at 86-86 on a Morel layup, but the Hornets answered with a decisive 8-0 burst in under a minute to go up 94-86 and sealed the game at the line for the 100-91 final.

Up Next: Cobleskill returns to action tomorrow, December 6, hosting VTSU-Johnson at 1:00 p.m. inside the Iorio Gymnasium.
