Delhi, NY: The SUNY Cobleskill men's basketball team came up just short in a tightly contested North Atlantic Conference matchup on Saturday evening, falling 67-58 to SUNY Delhi on the road.
The Fighting Tigers were led by junior
Quanire Greene (Albany, NY/Bishop Maginn), who notched a double-double with a team-high 16 points and 11 rebounds, shooting an efficient 50 percent from the field (6-12) and 80 percent from the free-throw line (4-5).
Marquay Tanksley (Cohoes, NY) stuffed the stat sheet with 13 points, eight rebounds, two assists, two steals, and a block while shooting 57.1 percent from the floor (4-7) and a red-hot 75 percent from beyond the arc (3-4). Sophomore
Elijah Morris (Mount Vernon, NY) added eight points and three rebounds, while
Chrischen Chung (Poughkeepsie, NY/LaSalle) provided a spark off the bench with seven points.
Statistically, the game was a near dead heat, with Cobleskill shooting 38.5 percent from the field compared to Delhi's 38.8 percent while also holding a slight edge from three-point range at 42.9 percent to the Broncos' 40.0 percent. Both teams were even in points in the paint (26) and fast-break points (8), while Delhi had a slight rebounding edge (36-31) and committed fewer turnovers (7-11). The biggest difference came at the free-throw line, where the Broncos converted 77.8 percent of their attempts compared to Cobleskill's 54.5 percent, proving to be a key factor in the final outcome.
Cobleskill came out firing, racing to a 7-0 lead after Greene completed an and-one to set the tone. The Tigers continued to control the pace midway through the first half, building a 16-6 lead after a deep three from Tanksley. However, Delhi responded with a 12-2 run over a four-minute stretch to grab a 26-23 lead late in the half. A pair of free throws from
Jermaine Wheeler (Manhattan, NY/Marist) pulled Cobleskill within one, but the Broncos carried a 28-25 advantage into the break.
Delhi carried that momentum into the second half, opening on a 10-3 surge to stretch their lead to double digits at 38-28. The Fighting Tigers battled to stay within striking distance, but Delhi maintained control with a 48-34 advantage at the 10-minute mark and extended it to 65-44 with just under four minutes to play. Cobleskill refused to go quietly, storming back with a 14-0 run behind strong play from Greene and Chung to cut the deficit to 65-58 with less than a minute remaining. However, time ran out on the comeback bid as the Broncos held on for the win.
The Fighting Tigers will look to bounce back on Tuesday, February 4, when they host SUNY ESF in a non-conference matchup at 6:00 p.m. in Iorio Gymnasium.
