Clinton, NY: The SUNY Cobleskill baseball team went toe-to-toe with Hamilton College in a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at the Loop Road Complex. Despite a pair of rallies and a two-homer effort from
Cole Platt, the Fighting Tigers came up short in both contests, falling 13-8 in game one and 5-4 in game two.
Game One: Hamilton 13, Cobleskill 8
Cobleskill's offense came alive late with a seven-run outburst in the sixth inning, but Hamilton's early damage proved too much to overcome.
Korin Laurilla (East Greenbush, NY/Columbia) paced the Tigers at the dish, going 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs. First-year
Jeffrey Gutierrez (Bronx, NY/Cardinal Hayes) stayed hot with a 2-for-3 performance, adding an RBI and scoring a run.
Cole Platt (Oneonta, NY) drove in two with a base hit, while
Jesus Sarda (Colonie, NY) and
Ryan Lansing (Cooperstown, NY) each chipped in doubles.
Reis Brammer (Cohoes, NY/CBA Albany) took the loss on the mound after giving up eight earned runs over 1.2 innings. Relievers
Dylan Schwam (Cooper City, FL/South Plantation),
Jack Laughlin (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Walter Panas), and
Connor Mulligan (Cheshire, NY) worked to keep the game within reach, with Laughlin fanning two over three innings of work.
The Continentals jumped on the Tigers early, putting up six runs in the bottom of the first. Cobleskill responded in the second, as Platt ripped an RBI single to bring home Sarda and make it 6-1. But Hamilton kept the pressure on, tacking on seven more runs across the second and third innings to stretch their lead to 13-1.
Cobleskill's offense broke through in the sixth. A wild pitch plated one before Lansing roped a double to left to score
Thomas Reis (Deposit, NY). Laurilla then cleared the bases with a line shot to center, driving in
David Flora (Windsor, NY),
Zach Ducorsky (Oceanside, NY), and Gutierrez to close the gap to 13-8. Despite the surge, the Tigers couldn't push across more runs, and Hamilton closed the door to secure the win.
Game Two: Hamilton 5, Cobleskill 4
Cole Platt's big day at the plate continued with two towering home runs, but a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh gave Hamilton the sweep.
Platt went a perfect 2-for-2 with three RBIs, launching a pair of long balls over the left and right-center field fences. Ducorsky added a double and an RBI, finishing 1-for-4, while
Thomas Reis and Gutierrez notched the team's other hits. Gutierrez also swiped a base.
The Tigers' pitching trio of
Logan Scott (Binghamton, NY),
Tanner Wood (Glenville, NY/Niskayuna), and
Tyler Sienko (Binghamton, NY/Windsor) kept things tight throughout. Scott allowed four runs on five hits over 3.1 innings, while Wood was charged with the loss after surrendering one run on three hits over 3.0 innings. Both pitchers struck out two.
Just like game one, Hamilton struck early with three runs in the bottom of the first. But the Tigers didn't flinch. Platt came up and smashed a two-run homer to left to cut the lead to 3-2. Later in the inning, Ducorsky roped a double to plate Reis and knot the score at 3-3. Platt's next trip to the plate delivered more fireworks as he went yard again, this time to right-center, putting Cobleskill ahead 4-3.
Hamilton answered with a run in the fourth to tie it at four. With both bullpens dealing, the score held through the fifth and sixth innings. In the top of the seventh, Cobleskill couldn't get anything going, and Hamilton made them pay, singling up the middle to walk it off in the bottom half.
Up Next:
Cobleskill will be back on the road Wednesday, April 23, when they travel to Keystone College for a 3:30 p.m. single game.
