Flora Sets Career Hits Record as Cobleskill Falls Late to Oneonta, 9-4

Cobleskill, NY: It was a milestone night at Fighting Tiger Field as senior third baseman David Flora (Windsor, NY) became the program's all-time leader in career hits, notching his 152nd to set a new school record. Despite the historic achievement, the SUNY Cobleskill baseball team couldn't hold a late lead, falling 9-4 to SUNY Oneonta in non-conference play on Wednesday evening.

Flora's record-breaking knock came in the bottom of the third inning, a sharp RBI single that brought home fellow senior Zach Ducorsky (Oceanside, NY) and cut Oneonta's lead to 3-2. The veteran third baseman finished the night 1-for-4 with a team-best two RBIs, a stolen base, and a run scored.

Ducorsky sparked the offense from the leadoff spot, going 4-for-5 at the dish with two runs scored, a stolen base, and an RBI. Designated hitter Zach Papanikolatos (Patchogue, NY) stayed hot at the plate with a 2-for-3 effort and a run scored, while right fielder Trevor Grieb (Red Hook, NY) added an RBI and a stolen base.

Cobleskill used a bullpen-by-committee approach, sending nine different arms to the mound. Declan Krogman (New York, NY/Xavier) was tagged with the loss after surrendering four runs in the seventh. Tyler Sienko (Binghamton, NY/Windsor) and Mike Markle (West Shokan, NY/Roundout Valley) each fanned two in their scoreless stints, and the Tigers committed just two errors in the field.

The game saw Cobleskill claw back after falling behind early. After Oneonta plated a run in the top of the first on an error, Flora responded in the bottom half with a sac fly to right, scoring Ducorsky to even the game. The Red Dragons regained control in the third with a two-run single, but Cobleskill chipped away at the lead over the next three innings.

Flora's record-setting single in the third brought it to 3-2. In the fourth, Ducorsky delivered an RBI single to plate Papanikolatos and knot things at 3-3. The Tigers took their lone lead in the fifth when Grieb grounded into a fielder's choice that scored Flora, making it 4-3.

But the wheels came off in the seventh. Oneonta pushed across four runs, highlighted by a two-run double from Ryan Cronin and an RBI single from Brendan Duffy. They tacked on two more in the eighth to stretch the lead to 9-4.

Despite outhitting Oneonta through six innings, the Tigers were unable to mount a comeback over the final three frames.
