Cobleskill, NY: A tough first half proved costly for the SUNY Cobleskill men's soccer team as they dropped a 3-1 decision to visiting Elms College on Saturday afternoon at the Soccer/Lacrosse Complex.
First-year forward
Gavin McEnroe (Burlington Flats, NY/Edmeston) opened his collegiate scoring account in the 25th minute, heading home a corner kick from senior
Spencer Reisman (Youngstown, NY/Lewiston Porter). McEnroe led the Tigers with three shots, including two on frame, while Reisman added two more attempts on goal. Veteran goalkeeper
Adam Champlin (South Kortright, NY) turned away six shots and came up with several key stops despite conceding three.
Elms struck first in the 10th minute, slipping a ball in behind the Cobleskill backline to take an early 1-0 lead. The Tigers answered midway through the half when Reisman's corner found McEnroe as he rose above the defense and hammered home his header to level the match at 1-1. The Blazers quickly regained control, however, with goals in the 29th and 44th minutes to take a 3-1 advantage into halftime.
The second half played out as a scoreless battle, with both sides generating chances but unable to convert. McEnroe nearly pulled one back when he connected on a volley just over the crossbar, but the Tigers could not find the breakthrough.
Statistically, Elms held a slight edge with 14 total shots (nine on target) to Cobleskill's nine (five on frame), while also holding a 6-5 advantage in corners. In a physical match, the Tigers were whistled for 15 fouls to the Trailblazers' seven.
