Cobleskill, NY – The SUNY Cobleskill women's basketball team received a season-high 19 points from
Zaylee Ramos but came up short in a 72-53 loss at Husson University on Tuesday night.
Ramos (Worcester, MA) was a bright spot for Cobleskill, turning in 19 points to go along with five rebounds while shooting 6-of-13 from the field and a strong 7-of-9 at the free-throw line.
Hannah Bonczkowski (Gilbertsville, NY) provided an offensive spark with 11 points, two rebounds and two steals.
Jaiyla Colon (Worcester, MA) filled the stat sheet with six points, five rebounds, three steals and two blocks, while
Kayleigh Bryant (Schenevus, NY) contributed four points, seven rebounds and a block.
Cobleskill finished the night shooting 29 percent from the field, 30.8 percent from three and 61.9 percent at the line. Husson shot 41.4 percent overall, 36.8 percent from deep and 84.2 percent at the free-throw line. The Tigers' defense forced 21 turnovers that led to 15 points, and the bench gave Cobleskill a 19-16 scoring edge. Husson controlled the glass with a 48-33 rebounding advantage, though the teams were even in points in the paint at 22 apiece. The turning point came in the second quarter, when the Eagles outscored the Tigers 18-4 and then followed it up with a 19-11 advantage in the third quarter.
Cobleskill came out aggressive, with Ramos scoring early as the Tigers jumped out to a 5-0 lead. Husson answered with a 7-0 run, but
Sydney Delisle (Mechanicville, NY) responded with a corner three to swing the lead back to Cobleskill. A Bonczkowski turnaround jumper pushed the Tigers ahead 12-9, and a pull-up jumper from Colon capped a 9-0 run to give Cobleskill a 17-9 edge late in the first quarter. Husson closed the frame with a three and a pair of free throws to trim the margin to 17-14.
The Eagles seized momentum early in the second, opening on a 5-0 run to take a 19-17 lead. Bonczkowski briefly stopped the run with another strong finish, but Husson followed with an 8-0 surge to build a 29-20 advantage. Ramos knocked down a free throw to end the run, but Cobleskill went into halftime trailing 32-21.
Ramos opened the third quarter with a bucket to make it 32-23, and after the teams traded threes-Colon answering from deep to cut it to 35-26. Husson responded with a 12-4 run to push the lead to 47-30. Bryant sparked Cobleskill late in the quarter with a block and a putback layup, sending the Tigers into the fourth down 49-32.
Ramos continued to attack to start the final period, scoring twice in the opening minutes to trim the deficit to 55-38, but Husson maintained control the rest of the way and closed out the 72-53 decision.
