Oneonta, NY – The SUNY Cobleskill men's soccer team faced a tough midweek SUNYAC test on Wednesday evening, falling 5-0 to nationally ranked No. 24 SUNY Oneonta at Red Dragon Field.
Senior
Spencer Reisman (Youngstown, NY) recorded one of Cobleskill's two shots on goal, while fellow senior
Nixon Merino (Ossining, NY) added the other. First-year
Anthony Chavarria (Cobleskill, NY) also registered an attempt for the Fighting Tigers. First-year goalkeeper
Sean Hanrahan (Elmira, NY) started between the posts and made three saves over the opening 45 minutes. Fellow first-year keeper Nate Harrington (Walton, NY) entered after halftime and turned away four of the five shots on goal he faced, finishing the second half with an .800 save percentage.
Oneonta controlled much of the possession and dictated the tempo throughout the match, finishing with a 40-3 advantage in total shots and a 13-2 edge in shots on goal. The Red Dragons also held an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks, while both teams committed four fouls in a relatively clean conference matchup.
The hosts opened the scoring in the fourth minute when Elias Curran finished a cross at the back post to give Oneonta an early lead. The Red Dragons doubled their advantage minutes later when Iyare Harris converted another service into the box. Cobleskill looked for a response through Reisman, who made a strong individual run through the Oneonta midfield and into the attacking third before putting an effort on frame, but the Red Dragon goalkeeper was able to make the save. Oneonta added a third goal in the 24th minute through Sean Griffin before finding another late in the half to take a 4-0 advantage into the break.
The Tigers continued to search for opportunities after halftime. Chavarria nearly pulled one back in the 47th minute when his effort from distance sailed just over the crossbar. Cobleskill later earned a corner kick in the 57th minute but was unable to turn the set-piece opportunity into a shot on goal. Oneonta added its final goal in the 72nd minute after working the ball to the end line and finding a runner on a cutback. Merino created Cobleskill's final scoring chance in the 83rd minute, finding space for a shot on target, but the Oneonta goalkeeper collected it to preserve the clean sheet.
