Cobleskill, NY – The SUNY Cobleskill women's soccer team fell 5-0 to visiting SUNY Oneonta in SUNYAC action on Wednesday evening at the Soccer/Lacrosse Complex.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Sammy Fausti (Clayton, WA) turned in a career performance between the posts, finishing with a career-high 17 saves while facing consistent pressure throughout the match. Senior defender
Kayleigh Bryant (Schenevus, NY) recorded Cobleskill's lone shot, putting her attempt on frame.
Oneonta controlled much of the possession and finished with a 36-1 advantage in total shots and a 23-1 edge in shots on goal. The Red Dragons also held a 7-0 advantage in corner kicks, while both teams played a relatively clean match with Cobleskill committing seven fouls and Oneonta four.
The Red Dragons opened the scoring in the 15th minute when a ball played in behind the Cobleskill backline sent Sara Kealey into space. Kealey worked around the charging Fausti before finding Violet Mattoni for the finish. Oneonta doubled its advantage three minutes later through Bella Mattoni before adding a third goal in the 23rd minute. Mattoni collected the rebound following a Fausti save and finished for her second goal of the match.
Cobleskill's best attacking opportunity of the opening half came from Bryant, whose long-range effort forced a save from the Oneonta goalkeeper. At the other end, Fausti made six first-half saves to help keep the Tigers within reach heading into the break.
Oneonta added a fourth goal five minutes into the second half off a cross before Mattoni completed her hat trick in the 54th minute to make it 5-0. Fausti continued to battle in goal and was especially sharp over the closing stages. She came up with back-to-back stops in the 68th and 70th minutes before making another strong save in the 80th. Fausti recorded 11 saves in the second half alone, posting an .845 save percentage over the final 45 minutes.
Cobleskill looked to build possession and find opportunities going forward, but the Oneonta backline stayed organized and limited the Tigers' chances in the attacking third.
