Cobleskill, NY – The SUNY Cobleskill men's soccer team came up just short in SUNYAC action on Saturday afternoon, falling 1-0 to SUNY Potsdam at the Soccer/Lacrosse Complex after a second-half goal proved to be the difference.
First-year
Jack Jewett (Delanson, NY) recorded the Tigers' lone shot on goal, while senior
Spencer Reisman (Youngstown, NY) remained active in the attacking third with a team-high three shots.
Gavin McEnroe (Burlington Flats, NY) and
Rob Staubitz (East Rockaway, NY) each added an attempt.
First-year goalkeeper
Sean Hanrahan (Elmira, NY) turned in another strong performance between the posts, making seven saves to keep Cobleskill within striking distance throughout the match. In front of him, the
Austin Galley (Edmeston, NY),
Samuel Spraker (Broadalbin-Perth, NY) and
Timmy Kensell (Monroe, NY) stayed organized and compact, breaking up several dangerous attacks and forcing Potsdam into difficult looks for much of the afternoon.
The Bears finished with a 23-6 advantage in total shots and a 9-1 edge in shots on goal. Potsdam also held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Cobleskill created the best chance of the opening half in the eighth minute when Jewett intercepted a misplaced Potsdam pass and drove a low effort toward goal, but the Bears' goalkeeper was there to make the save. Hanrahan answered with stops in the 24th and 29th minutes, while the Tigers' defense continued to force Potsdam into off-target attempts as the teams went into halftime scoreless.
The Tigers came out on the front foot in the second half, with Reisman firing an early effort high. Potsdam nearly broke through in the 56th minute, but a Cobleskill defender blocked Neptaly Castro's attempt before it could reach goal. Three minutes later, however, the Bears found the breakthrough when a loose ball bounced around inside the penalty area and Thomas Wendel rose to head it into the bottom-right corner for a 1-0 lead. Cobleskill nearly found the equalizer in the 75th minute when McEnroe got on the end of a Reisman corner kick, but his header sailed just over the crossbar. Hanrahan came up with another key save in the 79th minute before the Tigers pushed numbers forward and controlled much of the closing stretch. Cobleskill continued to search for the tying goal, but Potsdam held firm to secure the 1-0 result.
