Backus Brace Sends Tigers Past VTSU-Lyndon, 3-0

Cobleskill, NY – The SUNY Cobleskill women's soccer team controlled the match from start to finish on Monday afternoon, using two first-half goals and a dominant attacking performance to secure a 3-0 non-conference victory over VTSU-Lyndon at the Soccer/Lacrosse Complex.

First-year Kailin Backus (Lisbon, NY) turned in a career performance, scoring the first two goals of her collegiate career to record a brace. Fellow first-year Colette Kappauf (Oxford, NY) also opened her collegiate scoring account, finding the back of the net in the second half. The first-year duo of Kayla Lobycz (Hardwick, NJ) and Liana Shambo (Jay, NY) each recorded the first assists of their collegiate careers.

Sophomore goalkeeper Sammy Fausti (Clayton, WA) recorded her third clean sheet of the season, making two saves as Cobleskill kept the Hornets off the scoreboard.

The Fighting Tigers dictated play throughout the afternoon, outshooting VTSU-Lyndon 24-4 and holding a commanding 15-2 advantage in shots on goal. Cobleskill also earned nine corner kicks compared to two for the Hornets. The Tigers generated 11 shots in the opening half before adding 13 more after the break as they consistently applied pressure in the attacking third.

Backus wasted little time opening the scoring, collecting a loose ball inside the penalty area in the opening minutes and firing it into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead. Cobleskill nearly doubled the advantage shortly after when Kayleigh Bryant (Schenevus, NY) struck the crossbar before Alexa Siegel (Cornwall, NY) pounced on the rebound and sent her effort off the post. The Tigers eventually found their second in the 23rd minute when a Shambo passed the ball to Backus, who finished from 16 yards out for her second goal of the afternoon and a 2-0 advantage.

Cobleskill remained on the front foot after halftime and added its third goal seven minutes into the second half. Lobycz slipped a through ball in behind the Lyndon backline to a streaking Kappauf, who finished the chance to make it 3-0. Amanda Rice (Cobleskill, NY) later tested the Hornets' goalkeeper with a free kick from just outside the box, while the Tigers continued to dominate possession and create chances throughout the remainder of the match. Cobleskill's defense remained organized at the other end to complete the convincing 3-0 clean-sheet victory.
