Cobleskill, NY – The SUNY Cobleskill women's soccer team opened SUNYAC play with a historic 1-0 Senior Day victory over SUNY Canton on a rainy Saturday afternoon at the Soccer/Lacrosse Complex. The win marked the program's first-ever victory in SUNYAC competition.
Sophomore forward
Alexa Siegel (Cornwall, NY) provided the difference, scoring the only goal of the match for her third of the season. Siegel paced the Fighting Tigers with four shots, including three on target. Senior
Kayleigh Bryant (Schenevus, NY) added two shots on goal, while
Colette Kappauf (Oxford, NY) and
Kailin Backus (Lisbon, NY) each put an attempt on frame.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Sammy Fausti (Clayton, WA) turned in another strong performance between the posts, making three saves to record her second clean sheet of the season.
The match was evenly played throughout, with Cobleskill finishing with eight shots compared to Canton's nine. The Tigers held a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal, while the Roos earned seven corner kicks to Cobleskill's three.
The breakthrough came with 11 minutes remaining in the first half when Siegel pounced on a loose ball at the top of the box and calmly placed her finish into the far corner to give Cobleskill a 1-0 lead. The Tigers' backline held firm for the remainder of the half, with Fausti making a late save to send Cobleskill into halftime in front.
Cobleskill continued to search for a second goal after the break.
Amanda Rice (Cobleskill, NY) played Kappauf in behind the Canton backline, but her low effort was turned away by the goalkeeper. Siegel nearly doubled the lead in the 58th minute when her volley struck the post before forcing another strong save 10 minutes later.
Canton pushed numbers forward in search of an equalizer, creating several dangerous moments from corner kicks, but Fausti commanded her penalty area and the Cobleskill defense continued to repel the pressure. The Roos had one final chance in the closing minute, but the effort sailed over the crossbar as the Tigers closed out the 1-0 victory.
