POULTNEY, Vt. – Green Mountain College extended its winning streak to three games with a 2-0 shutout over SUNY Cobleskill in non-conference men's soccer action on Wednesday afternoon at Eagles Game Field.
Freshman forward Jordan Manikas (Springfield, N.Y.) opened the scoring with his fourth goal of the season in the 17
th minute of play on a nice crossing pass from freshman forward Ryan Schon (Scotch Plains, N.J.). Schon took the control of the ball on the left wing and served a nice ball that Manikas rose up for and headed past the Fighting Tigers keepers' outstretched arms. The assist marked Schon's first career point.
The Eagles were the recipients of some good fortune just before halftime when freshman midfielder Nazar Zhukovskyy (Stamford, Conn.) picked up a loose ball in the Eagles' offensive third and lined a shot which deflected off of a defender giving the visiting keeper no chance on the play.
SUNY Cobleskill (3-4-0) had two glorious chances to put a score on the board in the second half, but was unable to capitalize. Sophomore midfielder
Tyler Condame (Horseheads, N.Y.) was in alone within the six yard box and struck a shot well, but GMC freshman keeper Griffin Shelor (Cedar Park, Texas) made an excellent diving stop at point blank range to rob Condame of a goal.
Shelor then made an aggressive stop coming out on a partial break by the visitors' sophomore forward
Dan Rucinski (Latham, N.Y.) who was able to get a foot on the ball, but was promptly blocked by a charging and diving Shelor.
The Eagles also had several opportunities close in during the second stanza, but were unable to put a quality shot on frame to extend their advantage.
Shelor's two quality saves earned him his first career shutout and improved his record to 3-2-0. Cobleskill's senior keeper
Steve Seelman (Verona, N.Y.) made nine saves in the loss and slips to 3-3-0 on the year.
Green Mountain (3-2-0) will host Bard College on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in its next non-conference tilt, while Cobleskill will host be hosting Saturday as it faces SUNYIT in North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) action in a 3:00 p.m. contest.
