Cobleskill, N.Y.: The SUNY Cobleskill men's basketball team stormed back from a from an 18 point first half deficit to post a 72-70 victory on Wednesday evening over the visiting Wildcats of Cazenovia College at the Iorio Gymnasium in North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) play. With the comeback win the Fighting Tigers improve to 6-8 overall including a 4-2 mark in conference play while the Wildcats fall to 5-9 overall with a 3-3 record in league action.
Cobleskill fell early prey to a hot shooting Wildcat attack in the first half trailing 38-25 at the break as the visitors connected on 13-of-26 shots from the field, 50.0%, including 6-of-10, 60.0%, from three-point range on top of going a perfect 6-for-6 from the charity stripe.
However; a game has two halves, and in the second half the Fighting Tigers hit the visitors with a 14-to-2 run to open the second half to take a 41-40 lead at the 14:28 mark. From that point the teams were locked in a classic all-out struggle that featured nine ties and five lead changes.
The Orange & Black took the lead for good with1:10 remaining in regulation on a pair of free throws by senior guard
Alexis Nunez, White Plains, N.Y., White Plains High School, to make the score 68-67. Nunez then gave the Fighting Tigers the breathing room they needed by nailing another pair of free throws with 17 second let to push the lead to 70-67 after a Wildcat miss. From there the teams traded free throws until the game's final buzzer.
Nunez was the hero for the home team with 22 points, eight rebounds, five assists and two steals while freshman swingman
Brian Jackson, Bronx, N.Y., Global Enterprise Academy, hit for 14 points to go with a career high of nine rebounds on the night.
The Cobleskill bench played a major role in extending the team's current winning-streak to five games as senior forward
Cortrell King, Brentwood, N.Y., Upper Christian Room High School/Suffolk Community College, had 15 points, seven rebounds and a blocked shot and junior point guard
Michael Hutchinson, Brooklyn, N.Y., Prospect Heights High School, added nine points and four assists off the pines.
The Fighting Tigers will next be in NEAC action on Saturday January 24 when they host the Wildcats of Penn College at the Iorio Gymnasium beginning at 3:00 p.m. Â
