Cobleskill, N.Y.: The SUNY Cobleskill women's basketball team overcame a 12 point halftime deficit to post a 59-56 win over visiting Keuka College at the Iorio Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon in Cobleskill's North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) opening contest. With the win the Fighting Tigers improve to 2-4 overall on the season including a 1-0 record in conference play while the Wolfpack falls to 2-4 including a 1-1 mark in league action.
The Fighting Tigers clawed their way back into the contest in the third period by outscoring the visiting Wolfpack 29-17 to head into the final quarter tied at 44-to-44. In the second half Cobleskill shot an impressive 14-of-29 from the field, 48.3%, including 5-of-12, 41.7%, from three-point rage and connected on 11-of-15 shots, 73.3%, from the free throw line.
The home team held a 55-to-54 advantage with 10 seconds remaining in regulation when junior guard
Shiann Coons, Albany, N.Y., Bishop Maginn High School/Schenectady Community College, stepped to the line and hit a pair of free throws to make it 57-to-54. After a Keuka basket with three seconds left made it 57-to-56 the visitors were forced to foul freshman point guard
Cassie Semerad, Scotia, N.Y., Scotia-Glenville High School, who calmly nailed a pair of free throws to give the Orange & Black a 59-to-56 advantage. On the subsequent inbounds the Cobleskill defense did not allow Keuka to get a shot off to claim the conference win.
Shiann Coons led the winners in scoring with a team high 15 points while junior forward
Shelby Preston, Ravena, N.Y., Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk High School, dominated the paint in the second half to finish with 13 points, 15 rebounds and four assists on the afternoon. Senior guard
Ashley Creighton, Niskayuna, N.Y, Catholic Central High School/Schenectady Community College, continued her strong play with 11 points, three rebounds and four steals with freshman forward
Morgan Bullis, Bainbridge-Guildford High School, coming off the bench to score 10 points and grab five rebounds.
The Fighting Tigers will get little time to rest as they return to action on Sunday, December 6
th, when they host The Express of Wells College in NEAC play beginning at 2:00 p.m.
